Healing happens here — one handprint at a time.
At Salem Hospital’s Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, a once plain hallway has transformed into a vibrant mural of hope. Hundreds of colorful handprints — each created by a young patient on their discharge day — now line the walls, celebrating courage, creativity, and healing. Every handprint tells a story: of challenges overcome, milestones reached, and the strength it takes to keep moving forward. Some include messages of encouragement like “My illness does not define me” or “Damaged wings can be healed with a little bit of help.”
This growing mural is more than art — it’s a reminder to our patients and staff of the resilience of the children and teens we care for every day. And with paint bottles ready on the table, there’s always room for the next story to be added.
