Something I’ve noticed over the years ✨

When births happen close together, there will be some striking similarities- I call it twinning up. These two babies were twinning all over the place! They both gestated at high elevations, one in Mount crested Butte at 9700 ft, and one in the hills *above* Leadville at 11000 ft. And they were both chunky babies- one was 9,12 and one was 9,0! But the twinning doesn’t stop there: both moms were first-timers and both babies were born at home through extra challenging labors! And then there were the dads- both dads stepped up, especially postpartum with hearts full of loving service and so much resiliency. Deep bows of gratitude to these strong mamas, strong babies, and strong papas! And welcome to the world baby C and baby W. ❤️

Nine babies joined us since New Years! ✨✨✨ Some of the births were smooth like butter, some were much more complicated. Some were tiny, and some were hefty! Two girls and SEVEN boys. All are healthy, precious and thriving! So grateful for the families I get to work with and the babies I get to admire 😍

I had the immense honor of working with this new family recently, watching them grow through their first pregnancy, find their paths as new parents and welcome their baby boy to the world. Colter Creede was born January 1st, a New Years Capricorn baby, weighing a little less than we expected at 5,7 but a sweet healthy boy nonetheless. Births don’t proceed according to our expectations, and this little one had his own plan for his entrance to the world! Welcome to the world Colter! 🤍🩵💙

I wish I could keep this squishy adorable family in my back pocket wherever I go. Congratulations Buck and Zoe! Thank you for choosing me to walk beside you through your pregnancy, birth and early parenting. I have so much joy for your perfectly imperfect journey and the deep love that resides in your home. 💜

As I sit here with this beautiful family and their new baby boy, I have such gratitude that they were willing to travel to Colorado for her third VBAC. Her first birth was a c-section for breech, which is a whole other soapbox. But given the way our system governs VBACs, this mom would’ve been on her FOURTH surgical birth at this point. I’m so grateful that she doesn’t have the risk of each additional uterine scar, as her home state of Kansas would’ve asked of her. I’m so happy for her that she brings her babies to the world in a way that empowers her! I’m so proud of VBAC families, and I’m so proud to help VBAC families. Diligent risk-assessment and attention to intuition lead to best outcomes.

As we approach the final days of 2024, I like to put together a recap of the year’s births- in the spirit of accountability and to linger on all the amazing moments. This year, what stands out to me is my transfer rate- about 1/3 of my beloved clients transferred to the hospital for a higher level of care! It was a random assortment of reasons, as you will see. I can say each transfer was a strong example of shared decision-making, with families empowered and engaged in exploring their options.

There were beautiful straightforward births as well, of course! Some very fast births- where I showed up only shortly before the baby emerged! And so many bouncing, happy, smiling babies!

Here’s the year in numbers:
Total births 41
Boys 15
Girls 26
Amish 7
First time parents 13
Waterbirths 6
Biggest smallest 4,1 and 9,9
40 weeks 23
Fastest 1 hr 15 min
All time c section rate 8%
All time successful VBAC 85%
ZERO maternal or fetal deaths

13 total transfers for hospital birth:
7 transfers for prolonged second stage- which resulted in vaginal births for 4 of those babies and surgical births for the other three- one of whom had his ear presenting!

One transfer in labor for fetal distress, which resulted in a perfectly healthy baby born naturally and vaginally,

One transfer prior to labor for fetal distress, which resulted in a surgical birth,

One transfer for severe hypertension prior to labor,

One transfer for an active HSV outbreak in labor,

One transfer for prolonged rupture of membranes,

One transfer for breech presentation prior to labor,

Total c-sections 6

Three transfers postpartum:
One transfer immediately postpartum for a baby needing ongoing respiratory support

One transfer immediately postpartum for a retained placenta

One transfer postpartum for neonatal hypoglycemia

And that is all! I feel so incredibly grateful for the resiliency of the mother-baby unit, especially this wild year. Thank you for including me in your birth journeys! May 2025 bring joy in your adventures and laughter in your family. And for my practice- fewer complications please 😂 🙏 😍

Hello from baby land!! We had 3 amazing births this weekend- so much joy, big love, relief, driving, charting and phone calls! And very little sleep 🫠

These babies came with long hours of hard work, some uncertainty, hard decisions and also some awesome similarities. They were all girls, born on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and all weighing 7,15 8,0 and 8,2! 🥹

✨BFFs in the making? Triplets from another lifetime? I hope they can meet someday 😊✨
