One of the jobs that I had in the past was working as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) in a nursing home. A resident that I had the privilege to serve had dementia. At that time, a little girl in the body of a 75 year old woman. It was traumatic for her every morning when I, and other new strangers, would enter into her room to get her dressed for the day while she yelled; “I’m going to get my daddy on you!!” Her confidence in her father protecting her revealed to me her love for her father and the strong bond that I believed they shared.

This memory was foundational for the poem that I wrote for the Family Therapy Magazine.

If there is a family member that you know that has dementia, my prayer is for your Surrender.
