Amber Umbarger
Program Manager, Youth Prevention
Amber Umbarger, 45, is a Program Manager for the Youth Prevention Program at Valley Health Associates (VHA). She resides in King City, where she was born and raised. Amber has just completed her Associate of Arts degree in Addiction Studies at Hartnell College. She is also certified with a professional certification in To***co Cessation as well as a certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
Her previous position at VHA was as a substance use counselor providing outpatient services to both adults and youth. She was motivated by lived experience and a desire to support others through recovery and early intervention so they would have the support and guidance she knows can make a difference. At the age of 14, Amber was struggling to fit in and be accepted and thus fell into drinking with friends, which eventually led to drug use. This lifestyle took control of her life in her late 20s into her 30s and became dangerously close to gang and criminal activity. But she found the help that she needed.
In October 2025, Amber began leading the new youth prevention program. This program focuses on prevention rather than intervention for students 3rd thru 12th grade to teach them better emotional awareness, healthy boundaries, coping strategies, and decision-making to prevent substance abuse.
“Prevention is about giving young people the tools to make positive choices for their lives,” she said.
Amber values and appreciates VHA's whole person, person-centered approach to treatment, which addresses mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. She feels this approach helps people become balanced and get healthy in a better, more sustainable way.
Amber is a mother of three and says her family is her primary support system and motivation. In the future, she aims to further her education and create more long-term stability for her family while continuing to serve her community through prevention and behavioral health work.
“Being able to put myself back through school and give back to the same community I once struggled in means more to me than anything,” Amber said.
