Shingles is caused by the Varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes Chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus stays in the body and can reactivate later in life as Shingles.

Shingles can be painful, but vaccination can help protect against it. The shingles vaccine is recommended for adults age 50 and older. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether the shingles vaccine is right for you.
