👉 Local black owned business shout out - We the People Opportunity Farm - founded by Melvin Parson, We The People Opportunity Farm is a transformative organization in Ypsi, using regenerative farming and social enterprise to break the cycle of incarceration by providing formerly incarcerated individuals with paid internships, workforce development, and a supportive community. Check out their website to volunteer or join us in donating.
👉 Sunn m'Cheaux - activist, artist, social commentator, and the first Gullah language instructor within Harvard's African Language Program
👉 Lynae Vanee - NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Social Media Personality nominated poet, performer, influencer, writer, and actress whose platform aims to make black communities more informed, more confident, and more equipped to fight for their futures (revolt.tv)
👉 Tank and the Bangas - Grammy nominated New Orleans musical group, winners of the 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, featuring frontwoman Tarriona Ball who is also a published poet, regularly celebrating black culture and community through their music
👉 Janelle Monáe - Grammy nominated singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, arranger, actress, and model, empowering q***r black femme and nonbinary culture, lifting up other young black artists
👉 Tunde Adebimpe - singer, songwriter, actor, visual artist, founding member and co-lead vocalist of TV on the Radio, born to a family of Nigerian immigrants, using his music and art to speak out against racism, white supremacy, and systemic injustice
👉 Issa Rae - multiple time Golden Globe and Emmy nominated writer, actress, producer, director, often creating work that helps showcase the beauty of black community and culture
This is a tiny list of the artists, creators, and activists within the American black community that are affecting change in the world, and this list is entirely US-centric. But, I am so grateful for the things I have learned through following and supporting these folks (and others not listed here). They do not owe me their time, education, or entertainment, but I am lucky to have been able to learn and receive anyway.
