EP or 504? 🥣 The "alphabet soup" of school support can be confusing. While both provide help, an IEP is for specialized instruction, and a 504 is for accessibility and accommodations. Knowing the difference is your superpower in advocating for your child!

👉 Attention parents 👈 Tech everywhere 24/7 is hurting our children’s brains.

There is a complex and highly integrated network in the brain that only activates when we are “doing nothing.” This is known as the default mode network.

When you are sitting in the waiting room or unwinding after dinner, if you are not reading, watching television, or on your phone, your default mode network is projecting the future and sorting out the past. It’s processing your life. It activates when we daydream, during meditation and when we lie in bed before going to sleep.

A healthy default mode network is necessary for the human brain to rejuvenate, store information in more permanent locations, gain perspective, process complicated ideas, and be truly creative. It also has been linked in young people to the development of a strong sense of identity and a capacity for identity.

Scientists are concerned that because of technology’s ubiquity, young people have too few opportunities to activate their default mode network, and, as a result too few opportunities for self-reflection. People who do have more "daydreaming" moments do better on tests of memory, flexibility of thought, and reading comprehension. They also have better mental health.

Parents, what can you do?

👉 Talk to your kids about the importance of “doing nothing.”

👉 Model more down moments to your crew. Don’t let your default mode be a quick scroll on the phone.

👉 If your child has a personal device such as a phone or a tablet, put good boundaries in place on when and where they can use the device to allow more down time.

👉 Delay smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade with the Wait Until 8th pledge, and delay social media until 16+. Consider a basic phone if you need to get in touch before then.

You’ve got this! Stay informed and be intentional!

This information about the brain is from the national bestseller, “The Self-Driven Child. The science and sense of giving your kids more control over their lives.” Check it out! It is a great book.

At this age kids’ thinking has matured and they are more logical. They may still want to see death as something that is reversible, but they are beginning to understand that it is final.

School-age children tend to ask specific questions and have a desire for detail. They may also be concerned for how others are responding to the death. They want to know what the “right” way to respond is, and are beginning to have the ability to mourn and to understand and recognize mourning in others.

Despite their more logical thinking they may become overly fearful of sickness and injury because they don’t quite understand the mechanisms by which people die. Kids can also get fixated on why someone died, especially if it violates their logical principles of right and wrong. Under both of these circumstances try to help children develop an explanation for the death that makes sense to them. When they get older they can begin to understand the loss in a more sophisticated way.

Positive, responsive, language-rich interactions during a child’s first years, like reading together, support healthy brain development that critically influence executive function and attention and leads to social and learning skills.

Reading together strengthens your child’s brain development in the following ways:

1. Reading together encourages children to explore language, increasing their exposure to new vocabulary.

2. Reading together teaches children early literacy skills like book handling, picture naming, understanding how stories work and recognition of sounds and letters.

3. Reading together takes children to places and times they have never been.

4. Reading together provides children with an enjoyable way to spend screen-free time with their caregivers.

5. Reading together accelerates children to independent reading in primary grades, which predisposes them to overall school success.

6. Reading together is a positive childhood experience.

Need a healthy meal to cook with your family this Spring? Try this Spring Recipe — Crustless Quiche! Quiche traditionally has crust, but this recipe is without one to make a great gluten-free option. This quiche highlights asparagus and mushrooms. However, the base recipe is flexible enough to substitute any veggies, cheese, or even adding a protein! Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
1 tbsp butter
1c diced mushrooms
1c chopped asparagus
1c chopped green onions
1 clove garlic, chopped
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
8 eggs
½ cup sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt, not low fat or fat free)
1½ cups shredded white cheddar cheese (6 oz.)

METHOD
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9 in pie plate with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. Melt butter in sauce pan over medium heat. Add mushrooms, asparagus, green onions, and garlic. Sauté for 5-10 minutes, until veggies are soft. Season with salt and pepper. Turn off heat and set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs together. Add sour cream or Greek yogurt and whisk until fully incorporated. Stir veggies and grated cheese into egg mixture. Pour into prepared pie pan and bake for 30 minutes. A knife inserted in the middle should come out clean when done. Set pan on cooling rack for 15 minutes before cutting into slices for serving
