For the next six weeks, the Monday skills group is covering our Internal Family Systems module. If you’re unfamiliar with IFS, it is an evidence-based therapeutic form of parts work created by Richard Schwartz and is used around the world to gain a better understanding of ourselves and our internal processes through the lens of the parts that make up the whole of the Self.
Two big components of IFS are the theory that multiplicity of the mind is not just for people dealing with dissociative identity disorder (DID), but for all people, and that we have no bad parts. All our parts are trying to keep us safe with the only methods they know how.
IFS teaches us to embrace and unburden our parts so they can let go of maladaptive coping mechanisms and take on roles better suited to support our goals and live within our values.
