One tip to share, it is absolutely beneficial to say to a friend or loved one, “I have no idea what to say, and I’ll stay here with you in silence and just be present for you” after they have experienced a tragic event.

Honor your boundaries. If it feels off, it likely is. Discussing how it feels to you, confidentially with me or another therapist helps a lot! It is the best way for you to understand what you are really feeling and thinking (being in a room with someone else is actually crucial for this!) so that you can understand what you really want!
