First Step House

First Step House
A SLC-based behavioral health treatment and housing provider

The mission of First Step House is to help people build lives of meaning, purpose, and recovery. Founded in 1958, First Step House has evolved into a co-occurring capable, behavioral health treatment and housing provider. First Step House is accredited by the Joint Commission, the leading healthcare accreditation entity in the U.S., for our continuous compliance with performance standards and commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. We have been a consistent leader in the Salt Lake metro area delivering evidence-based interventions and achieving positive outcomes for individuals, Veterans, and families who struggle with high severity substance use disorders, histories of homelessness, mental health conditions, justice system involvement, and primary health concerns. We operate two residential treatment facilities, two outpatient treatment centers, and six transitional housing facilities in Salt Lake County, Utah. We are currently in the process of building two permanent supportive housing facilities for individuals with histories of homelessness, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders. The scope of services we offer include substance use disorder and mental health assessment, residential and outpatient treatment, recovery residence services, housing, case management, employment support, primary health care, peer support services, and long-term recovery management. Through our programs, we serve over 1,000 individuals per year- many of who arrive at our doorstep with very little resources, lack of family support, and numerous barriers to overcome.

Today we’re celebrating our awesome volunteers from University of Utah Health Plans who recently joined us at Central City Apartments.

They rolled up their sleeves and installed noise‑cancelling panels, a small change that makes a big impact in trauma‑informed housing.

We’re grateful for their energy and commitment to the community. Thank you for helping us build spaces where healing can happen. 💛

“There are two ways of exerting one's strength: one is pushing down, the other is pulling up.” - Booker T. Washington

At First Step House, we work to pull people up through housing, healthcare, employment support, and treatment access that removes barriers.

This Black History Month, we honor Booker T. Washington’s wisdom: strength is measured by who we lift.

Let's bust some myths about starting treatment.

"I missed the 'fresh start' window."

There's no window. Recovery doesn't care about New Year's resolutions or perfect timing. At First Step House, treatment is available today, tomorrow, and every day after.

There's no wrong time to begin recovery.

Thank you to Northrop Grumman Corporation for hosting a hygiene kit volunteer event for veterans at Valor House!

The team came together recently to assemble hygiene kits for our residents moving into housing and need essentials like soap and toothpaste.

One volunteer summed it up: "The event was amazing!"

These kits make a difference for veterans starting fresh. Thank you, Northrop Grumman, for your time and support.

First Step House is proud to be recognized again as a Top Workplace in Utah!

We ranked 4th out of 45 organizations in our size category, and 1st among nonprofits.

This honor reflects the commitment our staff bring to First Step House every day and the culture we continue to build together.

To our team: Thank you. This recognition is because of you.

We are proud to recognize Sorenson Legacy Foundation as a supporter of First Step House's Peer Recovery Support program.

With their support, people in recovery get guidance from those who've walked the same path. Our peer specialists provide hope, accountability, and proof that lasting recovery is possible - because they're living it themselves.

Peer support creates connection when isolation threatens recovery. It offers understanding when judgment could derail progress. And it reminds people they're not alone in the hardest moments.

Thank you, Sorenson Legacy Foundation, for investing in the power of lived experience and peer-to-peer healing!

Fresh starts. It's on our mind.

Everyone talks about new beginnings in January. But we're thinking about the people who've been trying to start fresh all year: waiting for housing, seeking treatment, rebuilding after loss.

Fresh starts shouldn't require waiting. At First Step House, we work to make them possible every day: housing when you need it, treatment when you're ready, support that doesn't give up.

New year, same commitment: creating pathways for people to begin again.

Holiday gratitude roundup 💙

This holiday season, our community showed UP for First Step House residents. Join us in celebrating the network of more than 50 volunteers and partners who made special efforts to brighten the holidays in November and December:

🎄 You transformed our spaces with festive decorations: Optum, Modern Age Employment Law, Morgan Stanley (Enable and Giving Back Committees)

🎁 You assembled hundreds of gift baskets to ensure every resident has something under the tree: Uplift Community Alliance, Candy Cane Corner, The LDS Women’s Organization, Veterans Upward Bound Utah

🧣 You provided warmth when it mattered most: Millcreek City, Salt Lake Rotary Club, Self Expression Music, and community members who donated coats and winter accessories

💚 You contributed holiday funds to make the season special for more than 700 residents: Align Complete Real Estate Services, Utah Community Credit Union - UCCU, CREA, Bonneville Builders

🙌 You volunteered your time to prepare and serve meals during our busiest time of year: Morgan Stanley, Intermountain Health, Uplift Community Alliance, elected officials, and neighbors across the city

To everyone who made the holidays brighter for our residents: You created joy, dignity, and belonging. Thank you for showing our community what care looks like.

2025 WAS A YEAR. Let's talk about it. 🎉

Residential Treatment clients:
✅ 168% increase in abstinence
✅ 133% increase in employment
✅ 77% increase in stable housing

Recovery Housing tenants:
✅ 86% moved to permanent housing or stable treatment
✅ 100% of lease-compliant tenants succeeded

Veterans at Valor House:
✅ 83% transitioned to permanent housing
✅ Beat national averages

Permanent Supportive Housing:
✅ 93% retention for people with serious mental illness

These outcomes didn't happen by accident. They happened because comprehensive support WORKS, and because this community showed up.

Thank you for an incredible year. Let's do it again in 2026.
