Yesterday, my wife and I celebrated our 7 year anniversary at (they added our names to our menus as a keepsake). We finished off our anniversary today with charcuterie and our 7 year ice wine; a bottle purchased on our wedding day, and set aside for this day.

To make a relationship last, love is a good start, but trust, communication, dreaming, nostalgia, and sharing time together keep the fuel in the fire.
olivia I love you, I love our life, and I am excited to see what happens next for us.

I'll admit, Valentine's Day can be a bit loaded with high expectations and some good ole fashioned chalky heart consumerism (does anyone actually like those heart candies?)

That being said...

I love a good excuse for connection, fun, and food with my wife. (I prepared steak for the first time and didn't suck!)🥩🎉

We don't need to DO holidays the way we've been told to DO them though.

Instead of focusing on getting a date and buying flowers, you can go out with a friend, by yourself, or with your dog.

St. Valentine's Day likely comes from a Christianization of the Roman holiday Lupercalia. So, if you were going to do today authentically, you'd hope that you get slapped with a chunk of blood-soaked goat skin for... you know... fertility.

Do today your way regardless of how you've been told to do it. Maybe lay off on the goat chunks though.

What and who can you connect to today?

***disclosure - this isn't therapy. If you want therapy, you need to hire a therapist.

Frequently, I talk with my clients about keeping a diverse library of coping/self care tools.

The advantages to doing this include better adapting to sudden, new, and different stressors (things that cause stress)
..and in my case, an advantage may also include entering a pumpkin carving contest with to get 150 toward coffee and coffee accessories.

So, stay tuned, I'll be requesting votes from you, your fam, your friends, and maybe even that family member you've been meaning to reconnect with.

This is practically my panacea of meditations. Practicing this was a HUGE piece in my own recovery.

What's up? I'm just taking a sec to enjoy a couple seconds freed up by a cancellation.

Of course, is enjoying a break from her strenuous day as well.

EMDR in a nut-shell

To those who have used or been through this protocol, I'm curious if you use any alterations... even though that would no longer be considered EMDR.

Comment below with your thoughts/alterations.

Part 2 - Trauma in the brain

Talk therapy helps with symptoms and is needed to build rapport...

But it doesn't treat trauma

My favorite hand analogy for describing trauma in the brain.

Your panic and intense emotions are not "just being moody," they're a trauma response.

Number 1 mistake therapists make in treating trauma is to dive into it too early.

Trauma therapy requires prep work which may include building coping skills, understanding treatment philosophy, practicing behavioral or cognitive interventions, stabilizing primary relationships (or possibly ending them), and a great variety of other actions.

If a therapist gets into talkin about trauma too early, the client risks re-traumatization and worsening of symptoms.

Therapists, I don't care whether you're using EMDR, BSP, TFCBT, or any other trauma-informed approach; as a therapist you are risking HARM of your client if you fail to prep your client.

Clients, hold your therapists accountable. If they are pushing too quickly (or slowly), let them know, listen to their feedback, and allow them to alter their approach.

Are you a therapist wanting more trauma competency? I'm willing to provide trainings/consultation for you, just DM me.
