In the last trimester, the placenta begins to secrete a corticotropin-releasing hormone, or CRH, which enables the mother to mentally and physically handle extreme amounts of stress; by the time of birth, most mothers have up to three times their pre-pregnancy levels of CRH[1] (or what we like to call the super-hero hormone).

I clearly remember wandering around my home in the postpartum period, unable to figure out how to accomplish my daily tasks because of an inability to act decisively in the presence of normal toddler activity, mess, and demands.

The ability to multi-task, overcome problems, and discover new solutions when obstacles arise are all skills directly affected by CRH hormones.

When the placenta is born, the feedback system that regulated the hormone’s production is interrupted, and the mother is left with only the CRH production of the hypothalamus. Because of this, postpartum mothers have low levels of this stress-fighting hormone making them more vulnerable to depression and less able to perform well under stress.

Studies from the National Institute of Health have found that consuming the placenta stimulates and stabilizes CRH levels. Endocrinologist George Chrousos, who led the NIH study, concluded that since the placenta contains large amounts of orally-active CRH, ingesting the placenta will stabilize CRH levels resulting in “a more stable emotional life for the mother.”[2]

Do you believe the Full Moon can trigger labor? I myself gave birth to my youngest on the Full Moon, and I do find an uptick in clients around this time. As a matter of fact I'm headed home from picking up my 4th placenta in 6 days. Full Moon Magic isn't playing shy this month🌕

Black women in America are 3-4x more likely to die from childbirth than white women. This is unacceptable.
From
"Statistically, black women in the United States have a mortality rate of 3-4 times higher than white women. The speculations are many as to WHY - all the way from genetic predisposition to systemic racism in the hospitals in which we birth. Whatever the true reason, that number is atrocious and things need to be done to fix that. One of my major feelings on the matter lies with the lack of representation of black women and WOC in general in the birth community. We need to see ourselves birthing in different scenarios so that we can see that we have more options available to us than just a medicated hospital birth. We need to see that we DO hire midwives and doulas and lactation consultants, and even birth photographers! Knowing our options can literally save our lives."

"You and me
Are born together
You the baby
Me the mother
And while I watch you grow
The mother in me is learning to grow up too
The umbilical cord
Has been replaced with a cord
That connects however far the distance is
From the time I was born as a Mother
My heart has learned the art
Of beating outside my body"

An old friend of mine who is a public health lawyer co-authored this VERY important piece.

"The charter details the rights of newborns to remain with a parent or guardian at all times, and for women to breastfeed, have a companion of choice, receive necessary information, and be able to consent to or refuse any medical procedures."
As someone who works in the birth community I've seen firsthand the stress that some of these policies (or even discussion of possibly implementing them) are putting on pregnant, laboring, and immediate postpartum mothers (and fathers).

Human rights and evidence-based care need to be weighed very carefully against public health in regards to this topic.

Long-abandoned, harmful childbirth practices are coming back

How are all of you Mama's holding up?
I've been receiving questions about how my current safety protocol has changed surrounding covid-19. Truth be told, not much.
This picture was from early last year. I have always followed the strictest bloodborne pathogen protocols and universal safety precautions. Safety and quality have always been and always will be my highest concerns.
One thing that you may see me doing differently is that I will not be entering hospitals for pickup and drop-off of your order. A quick exchange outside and we're set.
If you have any questions I'm here for a chat.
Lots of love💗
Lindsay
