ARUP Laboratories hosted 80 students today for ’s Spring HIVE Tour, an inside look at careers in lab medicine and beyond. Jonathan Genzen, MD, PhD, MBA, ARUP chief medical officer and senior director of governmental affairs, Kendall Miller, C(ASCP)MB CM, clinical product manager in oncology and digital pathology, and Mike Graczyk, MBA, MLS CM(ASCP)MB CM, operations director of ARUP’s Molecular Division, shared their career journeys, and one message stood out: career paths aren’t linear, and that’s ok.
“As you move forward, you’ll face moments that feel like rejection,” Genzen shared. “What matters is not letting that stop you from achieving your goals. Stay engaged, pay attention to your interests, and find ways to move through it.”

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide, and research plays a critical role in fighting it. In recognition of World Tuberculosis Day, we’re proud to highlight the research Allison Carey, MD, PhD, ARUP medical director of Hematopathology, is doing at University of Utah Health.
Dr. Carey uses advanced genetic technologies to better understand how the bacteria that causes TB adapts and survives with the goal of improving future treatments and vaccines. https://ow.ly/Njuj50YyfJa

At ARUP Laboratories, our people are committed to advancing laboratory medicine and improving patient outcomes.
In collaboration with the WashU Medicine, ARUP experts—including Lauren Pearson, DO; Ryan Metcalf, MD; and Nicholas Spies, MD—explored how AI can address IV fluid contamination in CBCs.
The team developed machine learning models to detect contamination patterns. When applied to a year’s worth of results, the models estimated that ~2% of eligible CBCs were contaminated and that 6–9% of red blood cell transfusions with matching CBCs may have been potentially unnecessary.
The findings demonstrate the feasibility of using AI to identify IV fluid contamination in CBC results efficiently and effectively.
