Spending time bent over in the yard?

Try this simple movement to keep your back feeling good:
👉 Standing Lumbar Extension

How to do it:
✔️ Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart
✔️ Place your hands on your hips or low back
✔️ Gently lean backward as far as comfortable
✔️ Hold for 1–2 seconds
✔️ Return to upright
🔁 Repeat 5 times every 30–60 minutes while working

Why it helps:
Yard work often keeps you bent forward for long periods. This exercise helps reverse that position, reduce stiffness, and take pressure off your low back.

A quick reset like this can go a long way in preventing pain.

If your back is already bothering you, we can help you stay active and pain-free this season!

Spending time in your yard shouldn’t leave you hurting the next day. A few simple changes can make a big difference!

Here are some easy tips to protect your back while working outside:

✔️Warm up first – Take 2–3 minutes to stretch or walk before starting
✔️Hinge at your hips – Bend at your hips and knees, not your low back
✔️Keep things close – Hold tools, soil, or plants close to your body when lifting
✔️Avoid twisting – Turn your whole body instead of twisting your spine
✔️Use the right tools – Long-handled tools can reduce bending and strain
✔️Take breaks – Don’t try to do it all at once—your back will thank you
✔️Switch positions often – Alternate between standing, kneeling, and walking

A little prevention now can save you a lot of pain later.

In most cases, an MRI is NOT required for a physical therapist to safely and effectively treat your back pain.

Here’s why 👇
🧠 Research shows that many people have “abnormal” MRI findings (like disc bulges or degeneration)… even when they have ZERO pain.

👉 In other words: what shows up on imaging doesn’t always match what you feel.

Physical therapists are trained to:
• Identify the true source of your pain
• Screen for serious conditions (the rare cases that DO need imaging)
• Build a plan based on your movement, strength, and symptoms—not just a picture

⚠️ MRIs are important in specific situations (like trauma, severe neurological symptoms, or when something more serious is suspected)… but they’re not step one for most low back pain cases.

Waiting on imaging can actually delay the care that helps you feel better faster.

Bottom line:
You don’t need a picture to start making progress—you need the right plan.

Sitting all day might feel harmless… but your low back would strongly disagree.

When you stay in a chair for hours:
• Your hip flexors tighten and pull your pelvis forward
• Your glutes “turn off” and stop supporting your spine
• Your core gets lazy, forcing your lower back to pick up the slack
• Pressure builds on your spinal discs (more than standing!)

Over time, this creates stiffness, weakness, and that nagging low back pain so many people deal with daily.

The fix isn’t complicated—but it DOES require intention:
✔ Stand up and move every 30–60 minutes
✔ Stretch your hips and low back regularly
✔ Strengthen your core and glutes
✔ Watch your posture

Your body was built to move—not to sit all day.

Low back pain that just won’t loosen up? Dry needling might be the missing piece.

Dry needling targets tight, overactive muscles that contribute to pain and stiffness in the lower back.

Here’s how it helps:
🔹 Releases muscle tension
🔹 Improves blood flow to irritated tissue
🔹 Reduces protective muscle guarding
🔹 Helps reset dysfunctional movement patterns

When muscles stay tight, they keep pulling on the pelvis and spine. That constant tension can create ongoing discomfort and limited mobility.

Dry needling works by stimulating the muscle directly, helping it relax and restore normal function.

Many people notice:
✔️ Decreased pain
✔️ Improved mobility
✔️ Less stiffness
✔️ Better activation of weak muscles afterward

Low back pain isn’t all the same.

🔹 Acute low back pain
• Sudden onset (lifting, twisting, awkward movement)
• Lasts days to a few weeks
• Sharp, tight, or spasming
👉 It’s your body’s alarm system.

🔹 Chronic low back pain
• Lasts 3+ months
• Comes and goes
• Dull, achy, stiff
👉 Often a movement and muscle imbalance issue.

The mistake?
Treating chronic pain like it’s still a fresh injury.

Acute pain needs smart protection.

Chronic pain needs strength, stability, and retraining.

If your back pain keeps coming back, it’s probably not just an injury anymore — it’s a pattern. Let’s fix the pattern.

Low back pain that just won’t go away? It might not actually be your “back.” 👀

One often-overlooked cause is a pelvic upslip.

A pelvic upslip happens when one side of the pelvis (ilium) shifts slightly upward compared to the other side. This can occur after a fall, sports injury, stepping off a curb awkwardly, or even repetitive movements over time.

Here’s why it matters:
🔹 When one side of the pelvis sits higher, it changes the alignment of the sacroiliac (SI) joints.
🔹 That uneven positioning creates tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
🔹 The lumbar spine (low back) has to compensate for the imbalance.
🔹 Over time, this compensation can lead to stiffness, inflammation, and pain.

Common signs of a pelvic upslip:
✔️ Pain on one side of the low back
✔️ Pain that worsens with standing or walking
✔️ A feeling of being “crooked” or uneven
✔️ Tight hamstrings or hip flexors on one side

The good news? When properly assessed and treated, correcting the pelvic alignment and restoring muscle balance can significantly reduce low back pain.

If you’ve been stretching and strengthening your back with little relief, it may be time to look at your pelvis. Alignment matters.

Why does one fall increase the risk of another?

A fall isn’t just a one-time event — it can start a cycle.

Older adults who fall once are more likely to fall again. Here’s why:
🔹 Loss of confidence – Fear of falling leads to less movement.
🔹 Reduced activity – Moving less causes muscle weakness and stiffness.
🔹 Balance changes – The body may start moving more cautiously or stiffly, which actually reduces stability.
🔹 Underlying issues – Weakness, vision changes, or medication side effects may not have been addressed.

The result? Strength decreases. Balance declines. Risk increases.

The good news: this cycle can be broken. 💪

Targeted strength and balance training rebuilds confidence, improves stability, and reduces fall risk.

If you or a loved one has experienced a fall, don’t wait for the next one. Let’s create a plan to stay steady and independent.
