Fans of green tea should feel right at home with phytol, a terpene with a grassy scent and a host of benefits.

Like some other terpenes, phytol is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and has soothing, sedative properties. But it goes further than that—studies have shown phytol to reduce mortality in seizures, and it is being investigated as a potential potent inhibitor of cancer growth.

Could it be the secret to the impressively long lives Japanese people are famous for? We don't know yet, but the data is promising!

Prescription medications failing you? Medical cannabis might be a great alternative (not to mention safer). Book your appointment with Lisa King at https://theherbmedical.com today to learn more!

Anyone who has enjoyed a cup of chamomile tea can tell you exactly what bisabolol smells like—faintly sweet, like honey or apples. And like chamomile tea, bisabolol is a soothing ingredient in medical cannabis.

But its uses are widespread. Its light fragrance makes it useful in cosmetics and skin care products, and it's a great remedy for skin irritation. It is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial. Its benefits make it a common ingredient in acne medications, and has been proven to have anti-aging properties which can help with fine lines or sun damage. And in medical cannabis, it helps provide a calming and soothing effect, and can help with anxiety some patients experience.

If you've ever stirred sage or rosemary into a sauce, you have a good idea of what terpinolene smells like—fresh, woodsy, and with a faint note of citrus.

Like many terpenes, terpinolene is antibacterial, antifungal, and early research suggests it might be a potent anticancer agent. People who use tea tree products are already familiar with its benefits (and that lovely fragrance). And it has a sedative effect, so it can even help get you a good night of sleep.

But here's where terpinolene shines by itself—many users report cannabis products high in terpinolene can relieve migraine headaches. Science has yet to explain why, but it's believed to relax the nerves and reduce anxiety, both of which can trigger a migraine.

One of the most underrated terpenes is humulene, which has the spicy, woodsy fragrance of hops. It's non-psychoactive, and has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. As its fragrance is often masked by other terpenes, it often gets overlooked.

But wow, what it can do! Thanks to extensive research and testing, we know plenty about the benefits of humulene. It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and analgesic. Interestingly, it is confirmed to have an appetite suppressant effect.

But one of its greatest potential benefits is as an anti-cancer agent, capable of causing apoptosis (cell death) in tumors. A 2016 study confirmed its cancer-fighting abilities, and that it appears to act as the sole agent in tumor death.

One of the more recognizable terpenes in cannabis is limonene, which gives citrus fruits their crisp, fresh scent. (If you've ever smelled a citronella candle, you'll recognize that distinct fragrance.)

Many patients find that limonene helps to lift mood and reduce stress. Cannabis with high limonene levels could be a good choice to improve your mood without feeling sleepy.

A study conducted in 2024 found that limonene can help with the anxiety some patients report from THC. And studies have also found that it may help reduce inflammation, pain, and stress. Early data suggests it even can help protect against cancer, diabetes, and certain brain-related conditions.

One of the most common terpenes found in cannabis is myrcene, which is also found in lemongrass, hops, and bay leaves. It has a spicy and musky aroma.

Myrcene is interesting in how it changes its effect at different dosages. Most people find myrcene relaxing and sedating, but small amounts may have the opposite effect and make you feel energetic. Animal studies show that myrcene is a good choice for reducing pain and inflammation.

One of our favorite terpenes is linalool, the sweet, woodsy, floral scent of freshly-grown lavender. You might also recognize its fragrance in eucalyptus, sweet basil, and bergamot.

Linalool is reported by most people to be calming and reduce anxiety. Just like its use in aromatherapy, it works to soothe stress and encourage relaxation.

But it's not just in your head (well, your nose anyway). Scientists have long suspected linalool had sedative effects, but new science shows it might improve sleep, relieve pain, and even work for some people as an antidepressant medication.

The more we learn about terpenes, the more we are finding they can help us relieve chronic pain and inflammation, leading to better health. Think medical cannabis might be the right choice for you? Book your appointment online with Lisa King at https://theherbmedical.com today!

Beta-caryophyllene, also listed as β-caryophyllene or BCP, is another common terpene in medical cannabis. But this terpene can do some amazing things!

You'll know that peppery smell from peppercorns, as well as cannabis, cinnamon, cloves, and oregano.

But β-caryophyllene's tricks aren't over yet—it's also a cannabinoid. That means it works on the same endocannabinoid system which helps bring relief to so many patients. But unlike THC, it has no psychoactive effects.

And let's not forget its other medical uses. Studies have found strong anti-inflammatory effects, and it is being studied for possible roles in preventing and treating cancer and managing depression and anxiety symptoms. β-caryophyllene is even being looked at as a possible treatment for obesity and Type 2 diabetes. What a hard-working terpene for something found on most people's dinner table!
