πŸ’™ March Is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month β€” a time when we wear blue to spread awareness about the importance of screening and honor those diagnosed with colorectal cancer. First observed in March 2000, this month serves as an important reminder that prevention and early detection save lives.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 158,850 people in the United States will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2026, and approximately 55,230 people are expected to die from the disease.

While overall death rates have decreased over the past several decades due to improved screening and lifestyle changes, there is a concerning trend: colorectal cancer rates are rising in younger adults. It is now one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in people under age 50.

Because of this increase, routine screening is now recommended beginning at age 45 for individuals at average risk β€” and earlier for those with a family history or other risk factors.

πŸ”Ž Why screening matters:
Colorectal cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages. When caught early, it is highly treatable β€” and in some cases, even preventable through the removal of precancerous polyps during screening.

If you are 45 or older β€” or younger with risk factors β€” talk to your healthcare provider about screening options. Early detection truly saves lives.

πŸ“ž For more information or to schedule your colorectal cancer screening, please call 276-496-4492.

πŸ’™ Wear blue this March and help us spread awareness about the importance of screening β€” for every age.

🌟 Provider Spotlight: Mitalee Doshi, MD 🌟

SVCHS proudly highlights Mitalee Doshi, MD, a dedicated family medicine physician serving the patients of the Bristol community and surrounding areas. Dr. Doshi has been part of our team since October 2024, bringing expertise, compassion, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Dr. Doshi is board-certified through the American Board of Family Medicine and completed her residency at Johnston Memorial Hospital in affiliation with Ballad Health. She earned her medical degree in 2021 from Ross University School of Medicine.

Growing up in Bakersfield, California, as a first-generation Indian-American, Dr. Doshi witnessed how language barriers affected her grandmother’s healthcare.

β€œI grew up in Bakersfield, CA, as a first-generation Indian-American, where I saw my grandmother struggle with her healthcare due to language barriers. This inspired me to pursue Family Medicine, where I could be an educator, advocate, and bridge between patients and the healthcare system,” Doshi said.

Dr. Doshi provides comprehensive care to patients of all ages β€” from newborns to seniors β€” and is committed to preventive care, health education, and building lasting physician-patient relationships throughout the community.

β€œThroughout my practice, I’ve discovered the immense satisfaction of seeing my patients' health improve under my care. Building trusting physician-patient relationships and providing continuity of care are core to my passion for medicine. I am committed to serving underserved communities and promoting preventive care through a holistic approach for patients of all ages. Residency brought me to Appalachia, where the kindness of the community and the need for better health literacy motivated me to stay,” Doshi said.

Outside of work, Dr. Doshi enjoys South Asian dancing, baking, traveling to beach destinations, and exploring dog-friendly restaurants with her husband and their German Shepherd.
