In session, I regularly talk with clients about “distress tolerance”. Or in other words, I ask them if they can “sit with this uncomfortable emotion, thought, or sensation?”
I believe in the power of yoga, breath, and movement to help increase our window of tolerance. Below is a short description of how it works…there’s research showing the benefits of using yoga as an effective tool for trauma, healing, and regulating our nervous system.

Yoga and the Window of Tolerance
Yoga supports our ability to stay within—or gently expand—our window of tolerance, the range in which our nervous system feels safe enough to process emotions without shutting down or becoming overwhelmed. Through mindful movement, breath, and stillness, yoga helps us “sit with” uncomfortable sensations and emotions rather than avoid or react to them. Over time, this practice builds resilience, teaching us that discomfort can be a place of growth and regulation, not danger.
