I want to encourage mothers to breastfeed—yes, , I agree.
But we cannot place the responsibility solely on moms. This has to be addressed at the level of public policy.
There’s a reason breastfeeding initiation is ~85%, yet only 25% of babies are exclusively breastfed at 6 months!!
If we’re serious about improving breastfeeding rates, we must approach this from a public health standpoint, not an individual-blame model. We need better:
• Paid maternity leave
• Accessible, ongoing lactation support
• Adherence to WHO formula marketing guidelines
• Increased NIH funding for lactation research
• Stronger workplace protections for pumping
Mothers don’t need more pressure, they need more support.
If you’re looking for quality lactation support and want to stay home, my team of IBCLC lactation consultants would love to help you in the comfort of your home. DM me today!
✨ Script inspired by my colleague Amy Kaplan, RD, IBCLC, and WIC lactation consultant. Grateful for colleagues who keep these conversations grounded in reality.
