No one warned me what the epidural would really do to my body.
They told me it might not work.
They told me I might get a headache.
They told me I’d feel pressure, not pain.

But nobody told me I’d be dealing with back pain for years.
Nobody mentioned the shooting nerve pain.
The stiffness.
The way my spine would never quite feel right again.

They said it would wear off.
They said I’d be fine.

And maybe for some women, that’s true.

But for me? That needle didn’t just numb my labor.
It wrecked my back.
And no one warned me.

I’d still make the best decision I could with the information I had at the time, but I wish I’d been told the whole truth.
The long term truth.
The “your back will never be the same” truth.

This isn’t to scare anyone.
It’s to say,
Informed consent means being informed of everything, not just the convenient parts.
