Depression can be difficult to recognize in children and teens because it often looks very different than it does in adults.
Many younger children express emotional distress through behavior changes like irritability, meltdowns, school avoidance, or physical complaints such as headaches or stomach aches. Teens may show increased isolation, academic decline, sleep changes, or risk-taking behaviors.
Parents often wonder:
“Is this just a phase?”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Am I missing something important?”
These are incredibly common and understandable questions.
We recently created a new educational blog to help parents better understand how depression shows up across developmental stages and when it may be helpful to seek professional support. The resource also includes a downloadable Parent Observation Checklist to help families track emotional and behavioral changes over time.
Transform & Renew Counseling provides counseling for children, teens, adults, couples, and families in San Antonio and through telehealth across Texas. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches including CBT, TF-CBT, and EMDR therapy and accept most major insurance plans.
