Being a parent is hard work and doesn't come with a manual. Most of us (parents) learn as we go, especially with your first child or any child with an illness, delay, disorder, or syndrome. Sometimes a parent just isn't aware that their child may be delayed when compared to their same aged peers, but this is an amazing visual for parents and caregivers to use to visualize how and where your child is on their development.

Adams Apple Therapy also provides online access (adamsappletherapy.com) to the ASQ (ages and stages questionnaire) and MCHAT (autism screener) for parents. Parents often tell me that they have a hard time understanding their child or that strangers don't understanding the child so they normally have to interpret for their child.

We refer to how well others understand a child as speech intelligibility.
Errors in speech sounds (articulation) impact how well someone is able to understand your child. The following charts break down which sounds your child should have by a specific age and how well a stranger should understand your child.

When trying to help your child expand on their expressive language skills, give them more time to respond. Try not to expect immediate responses or imitation.

Instead of telling them "say cow, say cow please" try showing them an image or manipulative of a cow and ask them what it is. Describe what a cow says and what it looks like.

"Wow, what animal is this?"
Pause and wait...
"Hmmm, it's an animal that says moooo. It lives on a farm and gives us milk".
Pause and wait...
"What farm animal could it be?"

Some children have receptive language delays (problems understanding), some have expressive language delays (problems expressing themselves/speaking), and some have delays with pragmatic language (social skills).

Does your child struggle following directions, labeling familiar items, or taking turns/sharing?
Does your child cry, scream, or have meltdowns when something is wrong, when they want something, or if they are dirty instead of tell you how to help them?
Does your child have a limited vocabulary and speak in short phrases?

I absolutely love what I do! With over 15 years of experience working with children, teens, and adults with autism, I had to become a Certified Autism Specialist (CAS). I'm honored to currently be the ONLY pediatric Speech Language Pathologist holding the Certified Autism Specialist credentials in the San Antonio area that works in the home health or clinic based settings.

A Certified Autism Specialist (CAS) has been verified by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to have voluntarily met rigorous professional standards, demonstrating experience and education in autism. A CAS has a minimum of a Master’s degree and 2 years of experience or a Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience. The CAS obtains 14 continuing education hours in Autism every two years in order to stay up to date in the field. A CAS has also passed the IBCCES Autism Competency exam.
