I met another mom at the park today. They had brought a bag of balloons to blow up. Of course my kiddo loves balloons so guess who bonded real fast! Her and I did... it was us.
We talked about so much but one thing I noticed is when I was talking to her, she cut me off mid sentence and started talking about a new idea or thought.
I knew she was ADHD like me.
So I got her excitement and energies. Didn't bother me one bit.
We talked about our kids and she started talking about her potentially having ADHD... I was just thinking, well no way! I couldnt tell! *sarcastically* with a smile hehe.
I listened for a good while until my kiddo came to me and stated he wanted to go p**p. I listened and felt drawn to what she described about her experiences. She described her ADHD as being in her head with racing thoughts spiraling all the time. She said, "Is this normal? Does everyone have this?"
I leaned in and said something she probably has never heard before. I said, "What looks like anxiety taking over is actually caused by ADHD. Treat the ADHD and you can feel anxiety going into hibernation."
She was shocked because her brain was telling her she just had to suck it up and deal with it. Something she probably had been taught culturally from generational systems. I felt a shift in our conversation like the ice finally broke from years of being frozen. This fellow mom had discovered that hope had been there all along.
That is why I will wake up every day and continue to craft a resource for the ADHD and Autistic communities to heal, grow, and learn about themselves. Its never too late to start therapy or to get help. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for continuing to support our deeply personal journey as we call to action changes to support affirming care, dismantle workplace iniquities, and discover the mixed bag of an ADHD brain.
