Take Action - Texas Nurse Practitioners
Allow SB 268 to become law to provide clear and consistent regulations for health care practitioners across Texas.
SB 268 ensures health practitioners are disciplined by boards with appropriate expertise and jurisdiction, protects against regulatory overreach, and prevents duplicative, costly board investigations.
Nurses, optometrists, pharmacists, dentists, and other health care practitioners are regulated by their own respective licensing boards. Under current law, someone can file a complaint against one of these practitioners with a board different than that practitioner’s licensing board, and the practitioner can be investigated and disciplined by that board. This system is confusing to licensees, making them accountable to multiple licensing boards and wasting taxpayer resources through inefficient or duplicative investigations.
SB 268 will simply ensure the agency with the appropriate expertise is the one reviewing cases and holding its licensees accountable, providing the highest standard of protection for the public.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Loretta C. Ford, who passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 104. Her life and legacy have left an indelible mark on the world of healthcare, as she was the visionary co-founder of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) profession.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Ford’s daughter, her family, and her friends. Her love and light will remain in our hearts and in the hearts of those she impacted forever.
Dr. Ford once said, "Without challenge, there's no change," or in Spanish, "Sin riesgo, no hay cambio." These words embody her relentless dedication to innovation, empowerment, and the advancement of nursing.
We fondly remember our cherished conversation with Dr. Ford in 2022, where she shared her inspiring journey—from creating the Nurse Practitioner model of care to her hopes for the next generation of nurse practitioners. Nurses have faced and overcome numerous challenges together, guided by the support of their mentors and inspired by their leaders. They have devoted themselves to caring for not only us but also our families and communities. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all nurses for their unwavering commitment and dedication.
