You've probably been told that smoking can cause cancer, lung disease and cardiovascular disease, but did you know it can also make your pain worse?

To***co prevents oxygen-rich blood from getting to your bones and tissues which can cause degeneration, especially in the discs of your spine. The result can be lower back pain and even osteoporosis. Smoking is also linked to fatigue and slower healing, factors that make painful conditions more prominent.

So - make today your Quit Day! 🚭 November 20 is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout. Quitting smoking improves your health, but it can be hard to do. There are lots of resources that can help on your quitting journey. Check out or download the quitSTART app for support!

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. 💙🩸

Did you know that Diabetes affects about 37 million Americans? Especially when it's not well-managed, the effects of the disease can radiate throughout your body. It can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart, and it is linked to some types of cancer. It can also cause painful neuropathy - especially in your feet - that can make it hard to stay active and healthy.

However, there are treatments available that can improve your neuropathy and allow you to keep moving and prevent further damage.

You can also follow the American Diabetes Association for more info and ways to support!

It’s officially Pumpkin Spice season! You’ll find warming spices and pumpkin flavors in almost everything during the fall. There’s the iconic latte, of course, but it’s also found in tons of baked goods, fancy cheeses, and even pasta! But many of these treats can be full of sugar, fat, dairy, and other less-than-healthy ingredients.

As part of our ongoing recipe series on the “Best (and Worst) Foods for Nerve Pain,” we’re highlighting how changes in your diet could help provide relief for nerve pain and neuropathy. Our goal is to help you focus on foods with what are considered “anti-inflammatory” properties that can work to calm and soothe oversensitive nerves, and hopefully cut down on those foods that can intensify inflammation and your neuropathy symptoms.

This season’s featured recipe is Healthy Pumpkin Spice Banana Muffins, a healthier treat that features all that great spicy fall flavor, just with some healthier substitutions. This recipe avoids some of the inflammatory ingredients that can exacerbate chronic pain (dairy, eggs) and includes some super-powered ingredients that can give you a boost of potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

Check out our blog “From the Doctor’s Vault” (link in bio) to see the recipe and try it for yourselves!

We are proud to announce that we have renewed our sponsorships of Las Lomas Elementary through their PTA for the third year and Ronald Reagan High School athletics through the Diamondbackers Sports Association for the second year in a row. As a small business operating in Stone Oak, we feel that it is vitally important to support our local area schools.

Dr. Smith’s philosophy towards sponsorships reflects his own experience as a public school student. “Having attended public schools myself, I understand the importance of well-funded local schools when it comes to educating the next generation. I am glad that these sponsorships will directly support students at these schools in so many different capacities.”

You can learn more about the missions of Las Lomas PTA Las Lomas PTA and about Reagan Diamondbackers Reagan Rattler Sports.

Vertebral compression fractures are fractures in the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column. In vertebral compression fractures (VCF), the body collapses and "compresses" into itself. It may involve the collapse of one or more vertebrae in the spine.

They typically occur due to osteoporosis or cancer that weakens the bones. But they can also happen after trauma (such as a car crash) or as a result of tumors on the spine.

They are unfortunately very common, especially in older women, but occur in older men as well.

If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate a compression fracture, don't wait - contact your doctor to start the diagnostic and treatment process.

Unfortunately, most seniors will experience knee pain at some point in their lives. It is commonly caused by acute injuries or osteoarthritis (inflammation of the joint).

Although it is common, there are ways for seniors to prevent, reduce, or manage their knee pain before it becomes chronic. A regular exercise routine can help strengthen the knee joints and surrounding leg, hip and buttocks muscles that support them. Check out our latest blog post for exercise recommendations that can keep your knees healthy and strong.
