TUESDAYS QUICK MYTH

Have you ever associated your sore back or neck to having a "slipped disk"? not because someone was sitting on you **cough cough** but due to an extensive workout or abrupt movement.. Lets correct that common diagnoses real quick. Having a disc slip out of the spine is actually impossible based on the anatomy of the body. The disc is actually surrounded by ligaments and is strutted to attach to each of the vertebrae. Its important to remember that the spine is very resilient and requires a high amount of load to have any sort of excessive herniation that will cause significant irritation on the nerves. Lets keep that in mind the next time we make a common diagnoses and try finding the real cause behind that sore back and neck.

One of the most common misconceptions is that foam rolling is a good warm-up technique on its own. Here's our Omega PT with some knowledge behind this myth..

Foam rolling does: -increase range of motion -decrease delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) when foam rolling post-workout
Foam rolling does NOT: -break adhesions or knots in your fascia -increase muscle performance nor does it decrease performance

Theoretically how foam rolling works: -foam rolling is decreasing neurological tone in the muscle. If we decrease tone in the muscle we can have better tissue extensibility -may also improve blood flow which is why it may help with prevention of DOMS
Optimizing foam rolling: -when used in conjunction with static/dynamic stretching and loading yielded longer term results -4x30 seconds had the same amount of ROM gains as 2x10 seconds, so no need to foam roll for > 5 minutes
