Today, we proudly recognize National Nurse Practitioner Week – a time to honor the incredible Nurse Practitioners (NPs) at our facility and across the country who bring skill, compassion, and accessibility to healthcare every single day. NPs are the heartbeat of patient-centered care – listening, diagnosing, treating, and advocating with unmatched dedication. While this week shines a spotlight on their contributions, their impact is felt all year long in hospitals, clinics, and communities nationwide.

To all our NPs: thank you for making healthcare more human, more reachable, and more exceptional.

Reynaldo, 58, enjoys spending time with his family and playing basketball. In his spare time, he loves playing darts and going fishing.

A few days before his hospital admission, Reynaldo began experiencing shortness of breath, weakness, and back pain. He came to the emergency room for help and was found to be in acute on chronic respiratory failure. He required intubation in the emergency department to support his breathing. At the time, he was using 2 liters of oxygen at home. He was started on intravenous antibiotics and sedative medications to stabilize his condition.

On September 3, 2025, Reynaldo was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central for specialized care and ventilator weaning. An interdisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and rehabilitation specialists—developed a treatment plan to help him recover.

During his stay, Reynaldo received intravenous antibiotics, respiratory support, and personalized therapy to help him regain strength and function. With consistent care and determination, he improved enough to be discharged on September 23, 2025, to an Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) to continue his recovery.

Reynaldo’s journey shows how teamwork, advanced medical care, and his own perseverance helped him overcome a serious respiratory illness and take the next steps toward independence.

Elizabeth, 57, loves dancing, spending time with her dogs, and watching scary movies whenever she can. She especially enjoys backyard barbecues with her family and grandkids.

A few days before her hospital admission, Elizabeth began to feel very ill. She was admitted to Northeast Baptist Hospital after experiencing breathing problems caused by sepsis and pneumonia, along with wounds that required treatment. Her medical history included high blood pressure, thyroid disease, liver cirrhosis, depression, and morbid obesity. She had also previously undergone a gastric bypass.

Imaging showed gastrointestinal bleeding believed to be related to a circumferential gastojejunostomy ulcer at the site of her prior gastric bypass surgery. Elizabeth was admitted for sepsis and respiratory failure and required mechanical ventilation to support her breathing.

On August 18, 2025, she transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central for continued care and recovery. Her treatment plan included intravenous antibiotics, wound care, use of a nasogastric (NG) tube for feeding, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to support her nutritional needs while healing.

Through the support of her interdisciplinary care team and her own determination, Elizabeth’s condition improved. She recovered from sepsis and respiratory failure and was discharged home on September 25, 2025, to be reunited with her family and return to the activities she loves.

Glenn, 84, enjoys camping with his family and friends and spending time with his cat, but fell seriously ill in June 2025. He developed chronic diarrhea, fever, fatigue, and malaise, and his condition quickly became critical. By the time he was admitted to Kindred Hospital San Antonio Central on July 19, 2025, he was facing multiple serious health challenges, including pneumonia, sepsis, encephalopathy, COPD, and C. diff infection.

During his hospitalization, Glenn required intubation and was placed on a ventilator multiple times. His care team provided close monitoring and treatment with antibiotics, including Cefepime and Zosyn, alongside other medications to stabilize his condition. With determination and the support of his physicians, nurses, and respiratory team, Glenn slowly began to recover.

On August 16, 2025, Glenn was well enough to be discharged to Peterson Hospital ARU to continue his rehabilitation. Thanks to his perseverance and the dedication of his care team, Glenn is moving forward on his recovery journey with the hope of returning to the activities he loves most—camping with his family and spending time with his beloved cat.
