Another wave is here.....if you have been waiting to get your Covid vaccine, NOW is the time! We continue to offer the Pfizer Covid vaccine daily to individuals 12 yr and older for free at PediDocs.
The visits we have and calls we receive each week, give a good picture of what is going around in the community. Unfortunately, COVID + cases are back up. We anticipate the next few months will be rough for pediatrics. Many of the common viruses were rare in 2020 and early 2021 (likely because of mask use and less socialization) but THEY'RE BAAAAACCCCKKKK! Not only are we seeing many cases of common summer illnesses like strep throat, hand foot and mouth disease and stomach bugs, we are having an abundance of "winter" viruses such as croup, RSV, and flu in JULY! All of these are wreaking havoc on our pediatric population! Sadly, we expect these will continue and likely worsen as the cooler months approach. Add to that another wave of COVID, especially a much more contagious variant and it's likely to be a rocky few months.
The delta variant which has arrived in our area and is predicted to soon be the dominant variant, is highly contagious with nearly twice the spread as the original strain. Unfortunately, many of our young patients cannot yet be vaccinated making them highly susceptible. We anticipate an approval of the Pfizer Covid vaccine in the fall for children 5yr-11 yr of age. Until then, please vaccinate your circle to protect the young ones who cannot be vaccinated yet. Vaccinated individuals are ~95% less likely to develop severe covid disease or require hospitalization compared with unvaccinated individuals. In the 12-15 yr old group, it's almost 100% protection.
Last year was rough. It was heartbreaking to see individuals trying to be safe, trying to do everything to protect themselves and their family and yet covid would strike without discrimination. Many ended up sick and alone in a hospital, never to go home or see their families again. Sadly, many of our patient families were shattered by the loss of parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches and others in this past year.
Fortunately, this year we have an arsenal. We have a vaccine that is highly effective and available to prevent severe disease; we have medications and infusions shown to significantly improve the treatment of covid; we have lessons learned and are better prepared. Please use these advances we've made...protect yourself and your loved ones with vaccination, good hand washing and masking when outside of your circle. We'll get through this...
