When it comes to knowing when to see an ENT, board-certified Otolaryngologist Dr. Christine Gilliam encourages patients to take persistent symptoms seriously. If you or your child are experiencing ongoing issues like congestion, drainage, pressure, difficulty breathing through the nose, or a lingering cough, it may be time for a closer evaluation. Many people assume these problems are just allergies or something they have to live with, especially in the San Antonio area, where allergy rates are high.

We’re proud to share an incredible achievement by our cardiovascular team, the successful completion of our first Aortic Surgery.

This milestone was led by Ourania Preventza, MD, Thoracic Surgery, whose expertise and dedication made this advanced, life-saving procedure possible.

Aortic surgery is performed to repair or replace a damaged section of the aorta when there is a risk of life-threatening complications such as rupture or dissection. It’s often necessary for conditions like aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections, and, in some cases, severe aortic valve disease.

Join us in celebrating this milestone and the extraordinary caregivers who made it possible.

When Yolanda Trevino first noticed her abnormally high blood pressure, she was rushed to the hospital. Tests would later reveal a cerebral aneurysm, a weak spot on an artery in the brain that balloons and fills with blood. She was left in the care of Neurosurgery Specialist Dr. Ryan Morton. During her month-long stay, she struggled with weakness on her right side and difficulty sitting up, but had her family, nursing staff, and Dr. Morton’s support throughout the way. Today, Yolanda is regaining strength and independence thanks to her care team and her husband, David, at her side every day, even assisting with catheter care. She advises others not to wait when faced with symptoms and to seek emergency care immediately, as their lives could depend on it.

RN Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator Michelle Dravis has worked in trauma for over 16 years. One lesson she's learned from handling trauma cases is that communication can be just as lifesaving as clinical intervention. According to Michelle, there is nothing more challenging than a patient or a family member being left in the dark, uncertain what's happening or how to prevent complications. But Michelle believes clear, compassionate communication not only empowers people but also reduces their fear and builds trust during the most critical moments.

Our annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Westover Hills marked the beginning of the holiday season. We commemorated the occasion with a combination of scripture and song, including a performance by the Westover Hills Band. Following tradition, each department made an ornament symbolic of their department to hang on the tree.

After years of debilitating headaches, vision loss, and the fear of going blind, Eva Voorhis finally found relief through the care of Neurosurgery Specialist Dr. Ryan Morton. Diagnosed with idiopathic intracranial hypertension in 2023 following a lumbar puncture for papilledema, Eva endured more procedures, including stent placements and a VP shunt, to reduce the dangerous pressure in her brain. Her journey included hospital stays, a cerebrospinal fluid leak, and the emotional toll of losing her independence and creative outlets. But thanks to Dr. Morton’s expert care, Eva’s symptoms are now in remission, and she no longer requires medication. She’s since regained her ability to enjoy life, finished her bachelor's degree, and has even returned to painting and gardening. Eva credits Dr. Morton with her recovery and restoring her quality of life. Today, she’s grateful to her amazing care team and her husband’s incredible support. She hopes to launch a recycled paper business with the second chance she’s been given and encourages others facing similar challenges to remain strong, informed, and to trust their doctors.

Our Story

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System was founded in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The sisters heeded the call from the Catholic bishop of Texas to care for the multitude of sick, infirm, and orphaned in the Texas frontier. When the sisters arrived in San Antonio, the population was only 12,000 and there was no public hospital - until the sisters founded CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital.
