From hero brother to PT professional: As a teenager, Dr. Michael Nash was inspired to pursue physical therapy when he helped his brother walk again after a devastating injury. He now works in New Hampshire caring for athletes and the surrounding community. He is also a senior instructor for the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy.

Dr. Nash recalls his times in the lab in PT school as β€œsuch a fun and eye opening way to learn.” His advice to current students: "Stay down-to-earth and keep learning! Take complete responsibility for your own growth and you'll be stunned at what you become.”

As we continue to celebrate , we'd like to spotlight Daphne Hernandez '17, Respiratory Therapy Supervisor at UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty & Research Hospital.

Her motivation goes back generations starting with her mother who is an alumna of the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing and encouraged Daphne to pursue medicine. Additional inspiration came from her grandparents who always supported her higher education goals.

Her most memorable education moments came during her clinical rotations. She was given the opportunity to rotate through multiple hospitals and different units. She says, "Getting to put everything I learned into action and seeing the difference it makes was eye-opening."

Let's do another alumni spotlight!

Dr. Martin Valdes found his calling in respiratory care while pursuing graduate studies at UT Health San Antonio School of Health Professions. One of the defining moments in his training was his first clinical rotation, where he gained hands-on experience interpreting ventilator graphics.

β€œI really enjoyed how well prepared I felt when it finally came to applying clinical knowledge,” he shared.

Now a pulmonary diseases and critical care fellow, Dr. Valdes thrives in a constantly evolving field filled with new research and therapies. β€œIt's rewarding to be able to help the sickest patients in the hospital as well as learn interesting lung pathology,” he says.
