Texas Biomed was out in force at the San Antonio Food Bank last week, helping to sort and package meals for our community.

Supporting our neighbors is always important, but especially now as food assistance needs across the U.S. have surged dramatically — with hotline calls for help quadrupling in just days, reaching levels typically seen during disasters.

Several of our volunteers were featured in photos accompanying news stories about the surge, from Seattle to Boston and beyond. See them and this insightful piece in Conversation US

🇺🇸 This Veterans Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women in our community and beyond who have served our country in the U.S. Armed Forces.

🇺🇸 Texas Biomed has 28 veterans with a total of 273.3 years of combined service. This morning, our Director of Security and Emergency Preparedness, Mark Hammargren, CPP®, led our annual Veterans Day event, honoring the courage, sacrifice and commitment of those employees by hosting an all-campus pancake breakfast. Mark is a veteran himself, having served 26 years on active duty in the United States Navy and retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 2002.

🇺🇸 We also held a minute of silence to mark the passing of our colleague, Tom Anthony, a Navy veteran who was laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston earlier this year.

🇺🇸 We are proud to celebrate all veterans’ contributions today and every day.

Texas Biomed Staff Scientist Israel Guerrero-Arguero, Ph.D. and U.S. Army Capt. Jesus Silvas, Ph.D., with the 59th Medical Wing / ST Office of Research and Technology Applications (and a Texas Biomed alum!), visited students at Mendez Elementary School in San Marcos to talk about careers in biomedical research. As part of their presentation, they showed students what it takes to stay safe while studying infectious diseases in different levels of biosafety labs.

The story underscores how eye-opening early outreach can be for students: "Dr. Silvas and Dr. Guerrero made a lasting impression on young learners by connecting advanced scientific practices with real-world career paths and providing tangible, age-appropriate demonstrations. Their collaborative efforts inspired curiosity about science while reinforcing the significance of infectious disease research in protecting civilian populations and military personnel."

Another fantastic Founder's Council Lecture Luncheon in the books! Today, Texas Biomed's Dr. Larry Schlesinger, Dr. Eusondia Arnett, Dr. Greg Ippolito and Dr. Riti Sharan discussed how the immune system works to protect us from infection and disease. They also highlighted their research into various aspects of the immune system. We always love the opportunity to share how the research at Texas Biomed connects to the health of our community. Thank you Founder's Council for your ongoing support of this important work!
