Texas Biomedical Research Institute We make today’s discoveries possible of becoming tomorrow’s cures! Since its founding in 1941 by Thomas B.

Texas Biomedical Research Institute aims to unravel the mysteries of chronic and infectious diseases through innovative thinking, creative problem solving and cutting edge technologies. Slick Jr., the Texas Biomedical Research Institute has gained worldwide recognition in scientific and academic communities for the quality of its basic research. Our scientists work each and every day to improve human health by being a world leader in lifestyle and infectious disease research. Each year, our scientists are engaged in more than 200 research projects and publish well over 100 articles in the international scientific literature. Texas Biomed partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, targeting advances in the fight against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, psychiatric disorders, problems of pregnancy, AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, parasitic infections and a host of other infectious diseases.

"Largely as a result of that work in the 1940s and ‘50s, we have a world now in which those diseases — measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, pertussis, polio — are really not part of American life any longer. We now have a generation of individuals who are young enough not to remember that. And yet their health was as a result of the impact of the discoveries of vaccines." -- Dr. Larry Schlesinger in San Antonio Report talking with Josh Archote.

Texas Biomed CEO Dr. Larry Schlesinger said he sees no legitimate scientific reason behind changing the federal vaccine schedule.

It's not every day you get to smash whipped cream pies into your senior leaders' faces.... 😅 We had a Pie Party this week as a reward for achieving an extremely high participation rate for our annual employee engagement survey. In addition to getting to eat some delicious pie, a few brave folks had the honor of covering our senior leaders, up to and including President/CEO Larry Schlesinger, in pie. We have some pretty good sports at Texas Biomed! 😎

Texas Biomed had a great time at the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST) Annual Conference in San Antonio. Professor Emeritus Jean Patterson co-chaired the Science Committee Program, shown here with Texas Biomed Board Member Dr. Gerald Parker, who is the Associate Dean for Global One Health at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Students from the Valero Young Scientist Program at Texas Biomed also had the opportunity to attend to learn about the exciting research being conducted all across Texas.

Texas Biomed was delighted to host students from Wall High School -- who traveled more than 200 miles on a special field trip to San Antonio! -- for an immersive afternoon of hands-on biomedical research.

Students participated in the "Morning Lark or Night Owl?" lab, in which they tested their own DNA to find out if they are genetically a morning person, a night person or somewhere in between. They practiced pipetting skills, amplified DNA using PCR thermocyclers and ran their samples through gel electrophoresis, which separates molecules based on size and reveals what their genes say about them. The students also learned about the gene-editing technology CRISPR/Cas9 and about the Southwest National Primate Research Center at Texas Biomed.

Many thanks to the teachers who organized the field trip and our dedicated Education and Outreach team for making it a memorable day!

Way to go Texas Biomed Community Outreach Club! Teammates are volunteering to help keep the area and waterways around our campus clean and litter-free. No small feat considering how much ground there is to cover! 🙌

Thanks to Josh Archote at San Antonio Report for showing how marmosets help researchers learn about aging, longevity and extending health span, as well as reproductive health, cognitive decline, diabetes and infectious diseases.

The story also highlights SNPRC Director Corinna Ross's passion for the small primates: Her office is adorned with mementos, knickknacks, artwork, stuffed animals and printed monkey memes above her desk. She prefaces her answers to questions with a warning: “Stop me, because I get kind of excited.”

Southwest National Primate Research Center at Texas Biomed

Around 450 squirrel-sized marmoset monkeys reside at Texas Biomed's primate center, aiding research on aging, health span and longevity.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, our scientists are advancing research that protects you, your family and our global community from the risks of infection.

Your support helps drive progress in three key areas of infectious disease research at Texas Biomed:
- Understanding how infections begin and spread, so we can identify who is most at risk and why
- Developing diagnostics, treatments and vaccines for diseases such as HIV, Ebola, malaria and other serious infections
- Improving population health by studying how factors like age, genetics and other conditions influence susceptibility to disease

As we plan for the year ahead, your support will help accelerate promising discoveries from the lab into real-world impact. It will equip scientists with the tools and facilities they need to tackle the next infectious disease threat and continue stories of hope for patients and families who depend on lifesaving research.

Your year-end gift, made by December 31, will help keep this research moving forward.

This is how we holiday! A highlight of the season is supporting children and seniors in our community through the The Salvation Army San Antonio Area Command Angel Tree program. We also had a chance to celebrate with one another at our annual holiday party - complete with a special visit from Santa!

This season, we’re Accelerating Science Together at Texas Biomedical Research Institute.

Meet Sophia, a San Antonio graduate sharing her experience with tuberculosis and why infectious disease research still matters close to home. Your year-end gift helps Texas Biomed scientists advance lifesaving work, including research toward better vaccines and treatments for diseases that threaten families in our community and around the world.
