Dr. Maggie Dou, PhD, LPC, NCC

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” This quote by Helen Keller represents my belief that hope and healing is available to all. I enjoy working with parents and their adolescent/teen children to improve their relationships and communication. My clinical experience includes working with adults and children with symptoms of anxiety, depression, sleep issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I also have experience working through grief of many kinds (death, divorce, child abuse and neglect). I am especially passionate about working with survivors of child sexual abuse and other traumatic experiences. I have extensive experience working with adopted and foster care children and their families. I am a trained Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner and Educator. TBRI is an intervention designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. This approach helps meet the physical, emotional, developmental, environmental, and relationship needs of children. This intervention includes giving parents/caregivers the tools and strategies needed for a successful relationship with their child.

Feelings aren't the problem.

They're natural.
Necessary.
Human.

Anger, sadness, fear, frustration —
they're all valid.
And our children need to know that.

But that doesn't mean every behaviour that comes with those feelings is okay...
Throwing things,
hurting others,
shutting down —
these are signals, not solutions.

Our job isn't to shut the feelings down.
It's to teach our children what to do with them.

To help them name what's rising inside.
To set clear boundaries around what's not okay.
And to guide them toward healthier ways of expressing what's hard to hold.

Because emotional honesty and self-regulation can coexist.
We can teach both.

Validate the feeling.
Redirect the behaviour.
That's where the growth happens. ❤️

Remembering Dr. Karyn Purvis on what would have been her 76th birthday 💜

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, we reflect on what an honor it is to carry such an incredible legacy by continuing the mission.

Quote of the Day

10/23/2022

Our kids will go through hard times. As parents, we can’t always take away their struggle.

Recognize it for what it is. Gift them with the remedy of your patient, listening ears and a safe place to fall apart.
