A statement from American Academy of Pediatrics President, Dr. Susan J. Kressly:

The decision by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to downgrade its recommendations to protect infants from hepatitis B is a dangerous move that will harm children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend routine hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns: All babies should receive a first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, a second dose at one to two months, and a third dose at six months. The pacing of these doses has been rigorously tested and proven to be safe and effective over several decades.

Vaccinating all newborns against hepatitis B effectively prevents transmission of the virus to newborns during childbirth, supports them to build immunity against potential childhood infections, and ensures long-term protection into adulthood from a virus that can cause serious liver disease and liver cancer. Infants and children can be exposed to this virus by close caregivers who may not know they are infected. Delaying the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine has no clear benefits and leaves children vulnerable to infection.

The FDA has just announced it's removing prescription fluoride supplements from the market, claiming they "have never been approved" despite decades of use. This comes amid growing attacks on community water fluoridation based on studies examining fluoride levels far higher than what's in U.S. drinking water.

This key distinction is being deliberately blurred in the debate: HIGH levels of fluoride (above 1.5 mg/L) can indeed be concerning—but that's completely irrelevant to the carefully optimized levels (0.7 mg/L) in community water fluoridation programs. If critics were genuinely concerned about fluoride safety, they would focus on areas with excessive natural fluoride levels, not attack an evidence-based public health measure that uses less than half those amounts.

Water fluoridation works through a unique dual mechanism that toothpaste alone can't match: direct contact with teeth while drinking and continuous protection through re-emergence in saliva. Communities that removed fluoride saw cavity rates double, with low-income families bearing the heaviest burden. Claims about pregnancy risks rely on unreliable spot urine samples, while fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities show identical average IQ scores (108.07 vs. 108.21).

This coordinated assault on fluoride—both in water and now supplements—creates a dangerous one-two punch against preventive dental care. The FDA's timing couldn't be worse, as proposed Medicaid cuts threaten to reduce dental access for millions of children already struggling to receive care. Once again, the most vulnerable communities will suffer the consequences of decisions driven by politics rather than science.

Every year 31,300 children under 3 years of age are evaluated in emergency rooms in the U.S. after ingesting a non-food object. And while the vast majority of these objects pass through the child’s gastrointestinal system and into their p**p without incident, some do not and need to be extracted.

The number one object? Coins. Coins are, by far, the most commonly removed object from a child’s esophagus (aka our “food tube” - which is different from the airway).

And while older kids might be able to verbally express that something is wrong, it can be particularly challenging to understand when a baby or toddler has swallowed something they shouldn’t have. And some objects are more risky than others.

Objects that can be life-threatening if swallowed, and require immediate medical assistance, include:

🚩Button batteries
🚩High powered magnets
🚩Water beads

Other objects commonly swallowed:

▪️Toy parts
▪️Jewelry
▪️Batteries
▪️Nails/screws/tacks
▪️Hair accessories

Remember, young children explore the world with their mouth so it is extremely important to ensure that these objects are out of sight, out of reach, and kept in secured areas.

⚠️ If there is any suspicion that a life-threatening object has been swallowed, do not hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.

Vitamin A, at any dose, does not protect against measles and no parent should give to their child vitamin A in hopes of preventing measles. Vitamin A is a micronutrient, meaning very small amounts are all we need to stay healthy and we get those through a healthy diet and in recommended doses of over-the-counter multivitamin supplements. Larger doses of vitamin A given over prolonged periods are very dangerous and can lead to vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, and, when more severe, liver damage and coma.

It is recommended, that under a doctor's supervision, children infected with measles be given vitamin A once a day for two days to reduce the severity of the illness. But that is a small amount in a medical setting. The only way to prevent measles is to have your child vaccinated with the MMR vaccine.
