Cataracts are the natural lenses in our eyes that become cloudy with time. Call (210) - 679 - 2020 for an appointment with Dr. Sharma for cataract evaluation.
Here is some initial information:
Symptoms? Cataracts tend to progress slowly, thereby diminishing the level and quality of vision. People may notice difficulty with distance and near vision, glare, or decreased night vision.
Who gets them? Commonly cataracts occur with passing of time, however, they can even occur by birth (congenital), trauma, medical conditions such as diabetes, or medications such as steroids.
Treatment? Despite being the most common cause of blindness worldwide, cataracts are treatable with cataract surgery. This generally involves an outpatient (same-day) surgery with removal of the cloudy cataract and replacement with an artificial lens that provides improved visual clarity.

Cataract is the eye's natural lens that clouds with time. Call (210) 697-2020 for an appointment with Dr. Sharma to learn more about cataracts and cataract prevention. See below for some highlights:
1) Dark or brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and antioxidants that can slow cataract formation. Berries, beats, carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, broccoli are only a few examples of healthy eye foods.
2) UV light protection with sunglasses, broad brimmed hats, or umbrellas is a key way to prevent early cataracts.
3) Smoking is a risk factor for cataracts and over time, smoking cessation may decrease risk of cataracts. Refraining from smoking altogether is recommended.
