Back-to-School Anxiety in Children
As children return to school, it is common to see an increase in anxiety. Some nervousness is expected, but persistent or elevated anxiety may interfere with learning, social interactions, and daily functioning.
🔎 Clinical indicators of anxiety may include:
• 🩺 Stomachaches, headaches, or fatigue on school days
• 😴 Difficulty falling asleep or frequent nightmares
• 😢 Irritability, tearfulness, or heightened emotional sensitivity
• 🚫 Avoidance of school-related tasks or refusal to attend school
🛠️ Evidence-based strategies for parents and caregivers:
• ✔️ Validate emotions: Acknowledge your child’s feelings to reduce shame and build coping skills
• ✔️ Establish predictable routines: Consistency in mornings, bedtimes, and after-school schedules reduces uncertainty
• ✔️ Use gradual exposure: Practice morning routines, visit the school, or meet teachers in advance
• ✔️ Model calm coping: Children learn resilience through adult behavior
• ✔️ Seek professional support: If anxiety interferes with daily functioning, consultation with a licensed provider is recommended
💡 With early recognition and the right interventions, most children adapt successfully to school transitions. Parents and caregivers play a key role in supporting a child’s confidence and emotional well-being during this time.
