The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported a significant increase in pertussis cases across the state.

What is Pertussis? Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by bacteria. It can cause severe coughing spells, which can make it difficult to breathe. While preventable with vaccination, immunity from the vaccine decreases over time.

NOTE: Children under the age of one year old are at a high risk of serious complications.

Symptoms:
• Initial symptoms resemble a common cold (runny nose, mild cough, low-grade fever).
• After 1-2 weeks, severe coughing fits develop, often followed by a "whooping" sound when inhaling.
• Coughing can be so intense it leads to vomiting, exhaustion, and even rib fractures.

What to Do:
1. If you or a family member develops symptoms, contact your PCM by calling the appointment line or by sending a secure message through the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal (https://my.mhsgenesis.health.mil/pages/home). Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.

2. Ensure you and your family are up to date on your pertussis vaccination (DTap or Tdap, depending on age) vaccination. This is especially important for those who will be in close contact with infants. You can review your immunization records in the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. Parents – you can review your minor (up to age 18) children’s records as well.

1. Infants and children under age 7 should receive DTaP vaccines at ages 2, 4 and 6 months, at age 15-18 months, and again at age 4-6 years.

2. Preteens should receive a Tdap vaccine at age 11-12 years.
3. All adults – including caregivers and parents – should receive at least one Tdap booster and can receive a repeat dose every 10 years.
4. Pregnant individuals should receive Tdap during every pregnancy to protect newborns.

3. Practice good respiratory hygiene: Cover your coughs and sneezes, wash your hands frequently, and avoid close contact with sick individuals.

For more information:
• Visit the CDC here: https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/index.html
• Contact the appointment line at 210-916-9900 for an appointment with your PCM, or schedule online through the Patient Portal (https://my.mhsgenesis.health.mil/pages/home)
Protect yourself and your family. Spread the word!
