‼️We have a zero-tolerance policy for disrespect. Thank you for visiting PRMA's Breast Cancer Reconstruction Community. Are you interested in breast reconstruction? Want to learn more about your options? Our goal is to help breast cancer patients learn more about breast reconstruction and the latest procedures available. Only 30% of women facing mastectomy for breast cancer are offered breast reconstruction. With your help, we can change this. We want women to realize that breast reconstruction is not only possible but also an option for them. Breast reconstruction is NOT a cosmetic procedure; it is every woman's right. PRMA Plastic Surgery specializes in advanced breast cancer reconstruction techniques including the DIEP, SIEA, GAP & TUG flap procedures, vascularized lymph node transfer, fat grafting, Alloderm One-step, and nipple-sparing mastectomy. We are In-Network for most US plans. Our most common reconstructive procedure, the DIEP flap, uses the patient's lower abdominal tissue to reconstruct a "natural", warm, soft breast. Unlike the TRAM flap, the DIEP flap preserves all the abdominal muscles. Patients undergoing DIEP flap reconstruction essentially receive a tummy tuck at the same time as the breast reconstruction. Since the abdominal muscles are spared, recovery is easier and patients retain abdominal muscle strength long-term. We have a lot of very useful information on our website http://PRMA-enhance.com - Please visit to learn more about today's most advanced breast reconstruction procedures. Please also sign-up for our newsletter to keep up to date on the latest breast reconstruction news. If you are interested in breast reconstruction at PRMA please contact us toll-free at (800) 692-5565 or via email at patientadvocate@PRMAplasticsurgery.com. At PRMA, patient education isn’t just about sharing information — it’s about partnership. 💗

Our approach is rooted in shared decision-making, where every patient is treated as an equal part of the process. Our surgeons bring expertise in breast reconstruction, but each patient brings something just as important: their goals, values, and what matters most to them.

Because there’s rarely just one path forward — there are many ways to get there. And the right choice is the one that aligns with you. ✨

That’s why advocating for yourself is such an important part of the journey. Breast reconstruction is deeply personal, and timing or options can vary depending on your diagnosis and treatment plan. Your care team is focused on many aspects of your health — so if reconstruction is important to you, it’s okay to bring it up, ask questions, and make sure your voice is part of the conversation.

You deserve to feel informed. You deserve to feel confident. And most importantly — you deserve to be heard. 👏

Not every patient has enough abdominal tissue for a traditional DIEP flap—and that’s where a stacked DIEP flap can make all the difference 👏

By combining available tissue, this technique allows surgeons to create more volume while still preserving muscle, leading to natural-looking, personalized results. ✨

It’s especially helpful for:

✔️ Thinner patients
✔️ Those needing reconstruction of a single breast with more fullness
✔️ Patients with prior abdominal surgery

Every body—and every reconstruction journey—is different 💗
That’s why understanding your options matters.

Proud to see our CEO, Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo MD, PRMA Plastic Surgery, advocating for patients and independent medicine on Capitol Hill.

These conversations matter—because the challenges facing independent practices don’t just impact physicians, they directly affect patient access, cost, and experience.

Grateful to have leadership that continues to speak up for what patients need most. 👏

Earlier this week, we shared Dr. Merceron breaking down tissue based vs. implant based reconstruction…but what if you already have implants? 🤔

Here’s what that process of switching from implants to natural tissue really looks like 👇

It all starts with a personalized consultation—where we talk through your goals and determine the best place to take tissue from based on your anatomy.

From there, your surgeon removes the implant and any surrounding scar tissue, then rebuilds the breast using your own natural tissue.

Depending on your skin and tissue thickness, a small “skin paddle” may be part of the reconstruction.

The end result? A warm, soft breast that feels much more natural than an implant.

Every journey is different, but the goal is always the same: restoring both form and confidence. 🤍

If you’re considering breast reconstruction after mastectomy, one of the biggest decisions is implant-based reconstruction vs. autologous (tissue-based) reconstruction.

In this video, Dr. Merceron explains the key differences between these two approaches and how surgeons help patients decide which option may be the best fit.

Implant-based reconstruction uses a breast implant to recreate the breast shape.

Autologous reconstruction uses your own tissue — often from the abdomen — to rebuild the breast using living tissue.

Both options can create beautiful, natural-looking results, but they differ in areas like:

✨ Surgical approach
✨ Recovery
✨ Long-term maintenance
✨ How the breast looks and feels over time

The best choice depends on many factors, including your body, medical history, lifestyle, and personal goals.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer — and that’s why conversations with experienced surgeons matter.

March is Lymphedema Awareness Month đź’—

After breast surgery, it’s important to keep an eye on subtle changes in your arms that could signal lymphedema—a common condition following lymph node removal or radiation. Regular self-monitoring can help you catch swelling early, when it’s easiest to manage and treat. ✨

Each month, take a few minutes to compare both arms and note any differences. Small, consistent habits—like measuring at the same landmarks or taking progress photos—can make a big difference over time.

📋 You can download a copy of PRMA’s Lymphedema Monitoring Chart on our website or through the 🔗 in our bio.

If you notice swelling or a difference of 2 cm or more, contact your healthcare provider.

Experiencing ongoing lymphedema despite other treatments? Dr. Fries specializes in advanced surgical procedures designed to improve lymphatic flow, reduce swelling, and enhance quality of life. đź’•

One of the biggest misconceptions about breast reconstruction? How painful recovery will be.

In this video, Dr. Carpenter talks about a concern we hear from many patients before surgery — fear of the pain during recovery.

At PRMA, we take recovery seriously. That’s why we use an ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocol, a carefully designed approach that helps patients recover more comfortably and efficiently.

Our protocol focuses on:

✨ Thoughtful pre-operative preparation
✨ Multimodal pain management (not relying on just one method)
✨ Strategies that help patients get moving and healing sooner

The goal is to reduce pain, improve recovery, and help patients feel more confident going into surgery. đź©·

Every patient’s experience is different, but many are surprised to learn that recovery can be much more manageable than they expected.

When it comes to breast reconstruction, many patients are surprised to learn that using your own tissue can offer long-term benefits.

In this video, Dr. Pisano explains some of the reasons patients choose tissue-based (autologous) breast reconstruction.

Here are a few of the advantages:

✨ It’s a permanent form of reconstruction – your reconstructed breast is made from living tissue, not an implant that may need replacement over time.

✨ It’s warm and living – because it’s your own tissue with its own blood supply, it feels natural and part of your body.

✨ It looks and feels like breast tissue – many patients appreciate the softness and natural movement that comes with using their own tissue.

For many women, this approach can provide beautiful, natural-looking results that age with the body over time. đź’—

If you’re exploring your reconstruction options, learning about the differences between implant and tissue-based reconstruction is an important first step.
