It's almost the new year, which means it's time to start making routine eye exams a part of your holiday tradition.

Annual eye exams are a critical part of maintaining a lifetime of healthy vision. Even if you think your vision is perfect, an eye exam can spot can spot serious problems such as diabetes, lupus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

1 in 12 people have diabetes and 50% of people are unaware that they even have it.

Did you know that diabetes can affect your eyes? Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that, if goes untreated, can eventually cause blindness. This condition can develop in anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Some symptoms to look for are spots or floaters in your vision, blurry vision, fluctuating vision, impaired color vision, dark or empty areas in your vision, or vision loss.

The best way to prevent vision loss caused by diabetic retinopathy is to closely monitor and manage your diabetes condition, and to get annual routine eye exams, even if your vision seems fine.
