To encourage labor, we sometimes utilize castor oil as one of our tools. We also have herbal tinctures available for clients who may need them.

In Texas, midwifery practice law stipulates that midwives attend births between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy. If a pregnancy extends to 42 weeks, we must recommend transferring to obstetric care.

Choosing where to give birth isn’t a small decision. It’s one of those choices that shapes the whole experience: how you feel, how supported you are, how you remember it years from now.
For many families, hospitals feel too clinical. Home birth feels too unstructured. A birth center sits right in the middle.

At Birth Center Stone Oak, we meet people every week who are still figuring it out. They want something safe but also personal. They want care that listens. That’s exactly what a birth center is built for.

This little guide in our blog can help you see if it might be a fit for you, for your goals, your comfort, and your baby.

Each suite features a deep immersion tub for hydrotherapy, which activates the parasympathetic response to help manage pain. The buoyancy, warmth, and freedom of movement offer added comfort. We encourage moms to use hydrotherapy for pain control, and about half of our babies are born in the water.

We do not perform ultrasounds in our office. Instead, we refer patients for an ultrasound around 20 weeks, which is the anatomy scan to evaluate the baby’s heart, lungs, and other developing organs.

While we have a preferred ultrasound provider that doesn’t accept insurance, we can refer you to facilities like Touchstone if you want to use your insurance. If you prefer a different provider, we can also refer you there, as long as they offer medical imaging services.

Our Story

The Birth Center Stone Oak was conceived by Joi Brock who realized the need for out-of-hospital birth center options in the area after moving to San Antonio in 2000. Joi’s practice in midwifery began in 2006 and the Birth Center opened its doors in 2012 with the belief that birth is a normal process of a woman’s body – it is a joyous, celebrated occasion. A woman who feels supported, informed and respected will embrace her journey through birth with empowerment, excitement and satisfaction.
