𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 #𝟑 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
As I start another year in practice, I wanted to not only reflect on what I’ve taken away from this past year, but also impart advice to those coming behind me:

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐬: even after a few years out of training, I’m still learning every day and working to improve my surgical techniques while adopting new skill sets. My advice to those coming behind me would be to keep reading, ask lots of questions, study current literature, and aim to get better every day. Medicine is a life long learning process.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤: taking care of patients is a team sport and as a physician, it is your responsibility to make sure everyone on the team succeeds while delivering high quality care to patients. I’m constantly reminding myself to educate instead of retaliate when things don’t go as planned.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: to be honest, sometimes it feels like a rat race trying to keep up in private practice. Overhead is steadily creeping up in private practice which means the added stress of trying to make ends meet, while at the same time trying to provide the same quality of care. Less reimbursements also means a lot of practices have resorted to concierge or cash only while others sacrifice time at each visit in order to see more patients. Medicine is definitely not the same as it was many years ago.

𝐈𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Patients come in to my office in severe pain and I’m able to either treat most of them with non surgical means or operative measures if they fail. Patients put their trust in me. That means a lot and I will never take that for granted! 🙏🏾

ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion) is a power tool in our surgical arsenal as spine surgeons to decompress the neural elements, restore sagittal alignment, and to achieve a solid fusion.

This patient presented to my office with a severe radiculopathy (leg pain) secondary to large disc extrusions at the level proximal to her previous fusion. We attempted to stay conservative and initially managed it with a decompression, but this was unfortunately not long lasting. She was taken for an ALIF with extension of her hardware posteriorly. She had immediate relief of her leg pain.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆?
Robotic spine surgery is a form of minimally invasive spine surgery that involves the use of a robotic arm to assist surgeons in the placement of screws and other hardware into the spine with accuracy and precision. Robots do NOT replace surgeons in performing your surgery, but simply augments the surgeon so surgery is done in a more precise manner.

In addition, the spinal robot can assist surgeons in optimizing patient care by using computer navigation, much like a GPS in your car. The potential benefits for patients include a shorter hospital stay, less tissue damage and therefore less blood loss, less radiation exposure, and smaller incisions.

A study came out in 2015 that showed that there were less black men in medical school in 2014 than there were in 1978 🤯

A shocking 1.9% of Orthopedic Surgeons in the US are African American.

African American women make up only 0.6% of orthopedic surgeons in the US.

I started the Dr. Webb Summer Mentorship program in 2022 to address these shocking statistics. Our goal is to increase representation in these fields.

The program is a 2 week hands-on experience designed to give students mentorship and exposure to the fields of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀
a fancy term for a slipped disc aka when one vertebrae slides forward over another one.

When the vertebrae slides forward, there is less space for the nerve and spinal canal which could cause severe back and leg pain.

We usually try non operative measures including physical/chiro therapy, pain meds, injections but if the slip is mobile (meaning it slides back and forth when you move) then most of these will need surgical intervention to address the structural issue at hand.

In this case, you can see the slip at L4-5 above this patients previous fusion and we were able to get him reduced - indirectly decompressing the spinal elements.

The patient woke up with immediate resolution of his leg pain.

I’ve always told myself that once I became a surgeon, that I would reach back and help the next person get to where I am.

This year we had over 75 applications to my summer mentorship program and we were fortunate enough to provide housing, food, training labs, and scholarships for our students.

Hopefully, next summer we can make it even bigger and that’s what it’s all about.

A huge component of the Dr. Webb summer mentorship program is allowing our students to not only learn and see various clinical conditions in an office setting, but also gain hands on experience in the lab reinforcing that knowledge.

Over the course of the program, we spent time in the cadaver lab where we reviewed anatomy and learned various surgical techniques.

We also spent time in the sawbones lab learning about the various instruments and tools that we use as orthopedic surgeons to fix fractures.

Our inaugural Dr. Webb summer mentorship networking event was a success!!

It was really important for Dr. Webb to make sure that our summer scholars were able to connect with other students, residents, and attending doctors during their time with us.

At our networking event, the students were able to meet and connect with pain doctors, an anesthesiologist, a hand surgeon, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, a Cardiologist and several other local physicians!

We believe mentorship/representation is extremely important and that’s why it’s a huge component of our programs!

I didn’t know any black doctors growing up. Never had met one. No one in my family is a medical doctor. I had to figure out this arduous path to becoming a surgeon alone, sometimes the hard way after many failures.

Because of this, I always told myself that once I finally finished all of my training that I would do everything I could to give back and help those coming behind me.

Just this year, we started The Webb Family Foundation. It is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization with a mission to increase diversity in medicine, specifically orthopedic and spine surgery.

We also started the Dr. Webb Summer Mentorship program which allows students the opportunity to gain mentorship, guidance, and hands on experience in the field of orthopedic and spine surgery.

We were able to bless 2 of our summer scholars with scholarships and also cover their entire travel/lodging expenses this summer.

And, this is what it’s all about! 🙏🏾

Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes a computer generated image onto a users view of the real world.

The key advantage of AR is that it allows the surgeon to not have to take his/her eyes off of the patient/surgical field and look directly through a headset. This is in contrast to the use of navigation or robotics when surgeons are forced to look away from the patient and at a computer monitor/screen in order to perform the surgery.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐑 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲?
Surgeons are using AR to improve the accuracy and precision of spinal instrumentation placed into the spine, thereby improving patient outcomes.

When using AR, spine surgeons wear a headset. This headset will provide computer generated images of the patients CT scan into their eyepieces which will display surgical anatomy and imaging that is superimposed over the users view of the real world. This is similar to GPS navigation in your car in which it displays computer-based surgical navigation guidance info onto the surgeons visual field thereby increasing the safety and accuracy of surgery. This allows for visualization of deep structures without the need to make an incision therefore giving the surgeon essentially, “x-ray vision.”
