As we enter our 40th year, we reflect on the challenges and progress of SAAF. 2025 started on a high, quickly turning into concern when federal funding was paused at the end of January. That was lifted before it caused irreparable damage, but not without fear. Every week a client asks "What's going to happen? Will I be able to get my medication?" I say yes, because our community will find a way.

In June, SAAF was notified that we should pause HIV/STI testing as funds were uncertain. Thanks to the help of so many of you, we were able to re-start testing within one week. In 2025, we tested over 3000 people for HIV and syphilis and 2500 for gonorrhea and chlamydia. We enrolled 150 people on PrEP and have over 500 people receiving HIV care. We identified 29 people with new HIV infections, linking them to care with Rapid Start.

SAAF provided housing assistance for more than 70 people living with HIV and their families. Cafe SAAF served >3000 meals each month. Our case managers and mental health specialists provided support for 650 community members. We've expanded mental health services to include LGBTQ+ support for those not living with HIV.


We did this with an amazing SAAF team and with the help from you. Your support, your time, your dollars, your unwavering commitment to the community we serve makes this possible.

In these precarious times, SAAF remains strong and committed to the San Antonio community. Our building on Grayson St stands as a testament to our history. SAAF was the final home for so many. On World AIDS Day, I shared that when I'm working in our building late at night, when it's quiet, there's an energy here. It’s an energy of the those for whom SAAF was the place they were safe and at peace.

So I'll end the year as I said that day - in the 1980s, we said Silence = Death. Today we won’t be silent. We will honor each life lost to AIDS, and we will honor each person living with HIV today. We take with us all those who passed through SAAF, whose voices say “Keep going. Stand on our shoulders. We’re with you.”

Join our Team! We are hiring a Medical Assistant for our clinic.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the clinic manager and providing patient care consistent with the mission of the San Antonio AIDS Foundation under the direct supervision and responsibility of a physician. The MA acts as the liaison to physicians to assure patient satisfaction with their visit.

This position is responsible for patient flow management, patient safety, performing phlebotomy, Point of Care testing, assisting in minor procedures, processing lab specimens and the safe operation of medical equipment. The MA maintains and orders the clinical and non-clinical supplies for their area. The Medical Assistant addresses patient questions/concerns using physician protocols.

This position demands a high level of cultural competency of the unique needs of the LGBTQIA++ community, communities of color, and other marginalized populations

Today on World AIDS Day we welcomed community members and clients for our open house and memorial ceremony. The space filled with stories, reflection, and updates about the work each SAAF department does. During the ceremony we heard from our speakers and said the names of people we have lost to HIV and AIDS.

Today we remember those we lost and we recognize the progress made in treatment and prevention. Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U), and treatment helps people live long and healthy lives with HIV.

Thank you to the SAAF staff for your work today and every day. We invite you to visit SAAF, ask questions, and start conversations about sexual health.
