Fr Ron Rolheiser, OMI observes that a universal pattern exists in all of life—from biology to relationships to the spiritual—called The Paschal Mystery. He gently notices that we religious people are often great at half of it, but completely unaware of the other half. Unfortunately, this missing piece stops us from experiencing the full joy and wholeness and meaning and healing that we long for.

In brief, The Paschal Mystery is 1-Good Friday (the loss of life), 2-Easter Sunday (the reception of new life), 3-The Forty Days (readjustment to the new and for grieving the old), 4-Ascension (letting go of the old and letting it bless you, the refusal to cling), 5-Pentecost (the reception of new spirit for the new life that one is already living). Or said simply: Name your deaths, Claim your births, Grieve what you have lost and adjust to new reality, Do not cling to the old but let it ascend and give you its blessing, and Accept the spirit of the life that you are in fact living.

Nature follows this pattern. Jesus Christ followed this pattern. Our lives follow this pattern—unless we fight it! But friends, we don’t have to fight it any longer. We don’t have to keep ourselves stuck. Jesus said “I have come that they might have life, and life to the full.” This new life is trying to get born in us, over and over. Will we let it? Will we participate in this flow of life, death, and resurrection? May we learn how to be born again, and again, and again.
