Our team recently visited one of our newest grantees, Children's Rehabilitation Institute Teleton USA (CRIT), and left deeply inspired by the impact of their work. CRIT provides comprehensive, family-centered rehabilitation services for children with neurological, muscular and skeletal disabilities.

During our tour with Federica Soriano, Chief Executive Officer, we learned more about the organization’s mission, met former patients who now volunteer to give back and heard powerful stories of resilience and progress.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to see CRIT’s work firsthand and proud to support an organization that is transforming lives and strengthening families every day.

This Recreation Therapy Month, we celebrate the dedication of recreational, physical and occupational therapists who play a powerful role in rehabilitation, wellness and connection.

We recognize how activities like art, music, movement and sports foster belonging, reduce stress, and support healing for Veterans, individuals with injuries and those navigating rehabilitation.

At Warm Springs Foundation, we are proud to support organizations like Kinetic Kids, Inc., helping expand access to therapeutic recreation that strengthens communities and changes lives.

In the early 1900s, while searching for oil, H.H. Jones, Howard Hughes Sr. and Walter Benona Sharp discovered mineral springs that would help shape who we are today. Instead of oil, they struck the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, unleashing hot, mineral-rich water and beginning a lasting legacy of healing.

That discovery led to the creation of Warm Springs Foundation, which later helped open the Gonzales Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital for Crippled Children in 1941. A place where children impacted by polio found opportunities to grow and heal physically, mentally and emotionally through the restorative power of mineral water.

Warm Springs Foundation carries that legacy forward by continuing to support people with disabilities and neurotrauma. As a nonprofit organization, the Foundation has evolved from operating hospitals to focusing on grantmaking, advocacy and collaborative support systems that improve lives after life-altering injury or illness.

Today, the Warm Springs property is owned by Ottine Mineral Springs and is open year-round, offering a one-of-a-kind spa experience centered on natural thermal mineral springs and continuing its long-standing history of health and wellness.

Together, Warm Springs Foundation and Ottine Mineral Springs honor a shared legacy rooted in healing, resilience and hope.

What once felt impossible became reality for one family, thanks to confidence built in the saddle. Through equine therapy at The Saddle Light Center, a young rider found independence, strength and the courage to explore beyond paved paths. 🐎

“It has changed what we believed was possible for our daughter and for our family.” – Rebecca McMains, mother and primary caregiver.

On this MLK Day, we pause to reflect on the values of service, compassion and responsibility to one another that Dr. King championed throughout his life.

At Warm Springs Foundation, these values shape everything we do from empowering individuals with disabilities to supporting families and strengthening our community. Today and every day, we honor Dr. King’s legacy through our commitment to providing life-altering possibilities for those impacted by neurotrauma.

Every year, millions of people set goals for self-improvement such as fitness, finances and mental health. Within weeks, most quietly give them up. Change is hard, especially when obstacles feel overwhelming or support feels out of reach.

For individuals living with disabilities or neurotrauma, the barriers to self-improvement can be even greater. Progress may look different, take longer or require resources many don’t have.

At Warm Springs Foundation, we work alongside grantees and community partners who help empower people to keep moving forward and build independence and confidence through accessible programs and life-changing support.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Let’s not give up on ourselves or on each other. Please share to help us keep empowerment flowing into the new year! ✨

Confidence can grow in powerful ways when encouragement, movement and connection come together. 🐎✨

The Saddle Light Center believes in possibility through partnership, patience and the unique bond between horse and rider. For decades, they have created meaningful opportunities for children and adults with disabilities across the San Antonio area to grow stronger physically, emotionally and socially.

Through professional equine-assisted therapy, riders build balance, coordination and self-confidence while experiencing the joy and motivation that comes from working with horses. More than a ride, The Saddle Light Center is a place where progress is celebrated, confidence is restored and life-changing moments happen one stride at a time.

This Christmas season, we’re reflecting on a remarkable piece of our history.

Last year’s Christmas card featured a vintage photo from the original Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital. What we didn’t know then was the powerful story behind the little girl in that image, a story we recently had the honor of uncovering.

Her name is Joan Perry, a former polio patient whose journey embodies the compassion and healing at the heart of Warm Springs Foundation.

We invite you to read her incredible story and celebrate the legacy that continues to guide our mission today.
