Chronic constipation is infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stools that persists for several weeks or longer. Though occasional constipation is very common, some people experience chronic constipation that can interfere with their ability to go about their daily tasks. Chronic constipation may also cause people to strain excessively in order to have a bowel movement. Ouch! Be sure you're drinking lots of water and eating plenty of high fiber foods. If the condition persists you should make an appointment with your doctor.

Dietary fiber: Key to a happy and healthy gut. The gut plays a big role in your total health, so eating more fiber-containing foods has many health benefits. Try to eat more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dried beans and lentils each day.

Fiber is the part of food that is not digested in the small intestine. Dietary fibre moves largely unchanged into the large intestine or colon where it is fermented by friendly bacteria that live there. But there are different types of fibre, all with a role to play. Check out this informative chart on different types of rich-fiber foods.
