I noticed a huge shift in problems when I worked with tweens - not only girls but boys as well. This is a great article.

Mental health issues are on the rise, but tween girls about ages 10 to 14 appear to be struggling more than in the past, a psychologist says.

This story seems uncommon, but it’s very much the opposite: common and happening right in plain sight.

I’ve worked with clients in similar situations - groomed online by predators they thought were “friends.” The truth was they were far from peers - they were grown criminal manipulative sexual predators, intent on extorting money, or pictures for distribution, from their victims.

Where did they meet them?

They slid into their IG DMs. They added them on Snap. They befriended them on Minecraft or Madden.

They are everywhere, and they are pure evil.

One of my clients was groomed so well they gave out lots of personal information - their neighborhood, their parent’s workplace, pictures of their cherished pets. Provocative pictures were exchanged.

Then this criminal demanded specific pictures and video, threatening to kill the animals and send the provocative picture to the parents and other family. Scared and terrified, my client complied.

This happened to my client in middle school. Luckily my client told a sibling, who went to their parents before things got worse.

Please monitor your kid’s online activity. Things can escalate very quickly.

I laud the parents of Jordan DeMay for speaking out about this while they are suffering the unthinkable. And hopeful his story will educate and save others before it’s too late.

Jordan Demay was a handsome, popular high school athlete and homecoming king. But now the community of Marquette, Michigan, is mourning the teen’s death.

Goals are so 2016. And while we all are hopeful to lose those 10 pounds, work out more, read X amount of books…..the reality is, by the 3rd week in January, our “goals” fade away.

Intentions change mindset. Intentions tackle behavior changes we want to make and sustain. Intentions help create new habits that become part of our everyday routines.
We’re coming atchu 2022. 🎉

Anyone who has worked with me knows I am conservative as far as medications go. (disclaimer: I am not a prescriber). When a parent brings in a child and announces “He needs medication” I often err on the side of “let’s try some other things first and then if we need to, I’ll give you a referral to a prescriber.”
Of course, sometimes medication is absolutely warranted - and needed- but more often than not, some major behavior and environmental changes need to be addressed first. Are sleeping patterns maladaptive? Is eating disordered? Is exercise non-existent?
Some clients believe that taking a pill will magically change everything. That’s simply not true. Psychotropic medications are not the be all, end all solution to any mental health diagnosis. They can be part of it, but there are other, equally important factors that can’t be overlooked or ignored.
