What Happens With a “Blown Vein” • Blown vein: This usually occurs when the needle punctures through or damages the vessel wall, leading to swelling, bruising, and infiltration of fluids. • Healing: Most blown veins will repair themselves naturally in 10–14 days, with the body reabsorbing the blood and repairing the vessel wall.

What Happens With a “Blown Valve” • Valves in veins: These one-way flaps keep blood moving toward the heart. If a valve is punctured or “blown,” it doesn’t regenerate. • Result: Instead of healing, the damage can lead to valve incompetence and appearance of spider veins or varicosities in that region. That vein segment can no longer be used for IV access.

Why This Matters for IV Practice • Cumulative damage: Each failed attempt or misuse of gauge/length can permanently take away viable veins from a patient’s access options. • Patient population at risk: Oncology patients, dialysis patients, and anyone with frequent hospitalizations often face severely limited vascular access because of repeated damage. • Education is key: Nurses and vascular access specialists who understand vessel anatomy, valve placement, and proper catheter selection protect veins for future use.

The I-VIEW Medical IV Assessment Card is an innovative guide designed to support accurate catheter selection. It can be used with or without vein visualization technology to properly assess and select the most appropriate catheter gauge and length for each patient’s unique vein anatomy.

Made from a translucent material, the card allows clinicians to place it directly over the chosen vein, clearly visualizing whether the selected catheter gauge is appropriately sized for the vessel. All catheter gauges used for peripheral IV insertions are listed on the guide, with exact millimeter measurements provided to ensure precise selection.
