Jose G. Cuevas, Jr., “Captain Joe Cuevas” a life-long resident of Port Isabel, Texas passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, at the age of 57 at his home, surrounded by his wife and loving family. Jose was born on June 25, 1968, in Brownsville, Texas and was the beloved son of the late Maria and Jose Cuevas Sr. He graduated from Port Isabel High School in 1986. In 1989, Jose pursued a career in law enforcement and served for two years as a police officer with the Port Isabel Police Department in Port Isabel, Texas. He dedicated himself to protecting others with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility. Beyond his service, he was a Laguna Madre youth baseball coach, giving his time generously and teaching children far more than the game—he taught teamwork, confidence, and heart. Jose was the kind of person whose presence made things feel steady, familiar, and warm. To us, his family, he was the heart of our home and the constant thread that held us together. He showed his love in everyday ways: showing up, listening, laughing, and always making room for one more person at the table. Family and friends were never separate in his eyes; if you were near him long enough, you became both. Jose was proud to be a father to his five children, a role he carried with devotion and quiet strength. In every stage of their lives, he was their loudest supporter, always encouraging every dream, celebrating every effort, and standing beside them in every endeavor, no matter how big or small. He taught us patience, resilience, and how to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Those lessons were shared not only at home, but also in the community he served so faithfully. As a fishing captain, he found peace on the water, sharing his love of fishing with anyone lucky enough to be on the boat beside him. Jose was the proud owner of Los Tortugos Seafood Market restaurant, alongside his wife, Violeta, and that restaurant reflected who he was: welcoming, hardworking, and built around bringing people together. It was more than a business—it was a gathering place filled with laughter, stories, and good food. When he wasn’t working or with family, you could often find him at a concert, fully alive in the music, soaking in the joy of the moment or deep-sea fishing maxing out on red snappers with his closest friends and family. Though our hearts are heavy, we are deeply grateful for the life he lived and the love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in his children, in the community he protected, in the players he coached, in the people he guided on the water, and in the many friendships he nurtured along the way. We take comfort in knowing that his life was full, his love was deeply felt, and his spirit will remain with us—steady, familiar, and warm—always.
