I wrote something new about how mediation skills actually get learned.

Growing up, I watched my parents teach art. They didn’t just explain techniques. They would demonstrate, hand the pencil back, and stay close while you worked through it.

That approach stuck with me and became the backbone of how I teach mediation today. Real skill develops through practice with feedback while you’re doing the work.

If you’re curious how mediation training really works behind the scenes, here’s the piece:

A look at mediation training methods that build skill through practice, feedback, and repetition to develops confidence and muscle memory.

I’m looking forward to teaching the 40-hour Divorce Mediation Training with Robin Seigle this spring.

Robin brings deep experience and steady judgment to complex family cases. She has spent years working in the trenches and understands how to help professionals stay clear and structured when the dynamics get difficult.

Each of us brings a distinct perspective to the training. Seeing how those perspectives operate in the same case is part of the learning.

If you are thinking about adding mediation to your practice, you will be learning from both of us.

Mediation style matters.

Some mediators emphasize communication and empowerment. Others provide more direct guidance. Most experienced practitioners adjust their approach based on what the case requires.

Balance matters too.

Concerns about power imbalance come up early in many divorce cases. A well-structured process addresses those concerns through pacing, transparency, consulting attorneys, and careful screening.

This week’s Weber Dispute Resolution newsletter looks at both mediation style and process balance.

You can read it here:

Most professionals who come to mediation training already know the concepts.

What they want is confidence in the room.

That only comes from practice.

The March 40-hour training is built around structured reps, breakout work, and real-time feedback. We spend time on pacing, neutrality, and how to stay steady when things get tense.

If you’ve been considering it, now is a good time to take a closer look.

Some divorce matters are tough because the personalities involved make them tough.

I wrote about managing difficult client dynamics and about the fear, uncertainty, and trust issues that tend to fuel conflict.

Some cases leave you oddly tired.

They seem to drain you. The clients’ personalities collide and progress inches along. You go home wondering why it felt so hard.

Those cases are common. They are part of professional life in divorce mediation and other conflict work.

I wrote a piece about working with difficult people and high-conflict dynamics, and how structure and judgment keep the process steady when things get tense.

If you do this kind of work, you will probably recognize a few.

Working with difficult people in divorce mediation requires judgment, structure, and steady process management.

We’ve published two recent articles on process and structure in divorce mediation.

One is written for professionals who manage complex divorce conversations. The other is client-facing, but often resonates just as strongly with professionals supporting families through transition.

Together, they reflect how structure and pacing shape what becomes possible in difficult conversations.

I shared a short piece today about how structure and process shape divorce conversations when emotions run high.

In my work, I see how pacing, clarity, and a steady framework can make difficult discussions more workable for everyone involved.

If you work with families going through divorce, or support people in that space, this may be worth a read.

A clear divorce mediation process helps professionals manage difficult conversations with structure and neutrality.

I posted a short piece today about why structure matters when emotions run high in divorce.
Most people don’t struggle because they’re unreasonable. They struggle because the conversation speeds up, old issues pile on, and everything starts happening at once.
Structure slows things down enough for people to think and make decisions they can live with later.
If you’re in the middle of something hard, or supporting someone who is, this may be worth a read.
