🥦🚨 Sounding the 🥦 alarm! 95% of Americans are not eating sufficient dietary fiber! Why does fiber matter?

🍎 Fiber helps move foods through your digestive tract…you know, so they don’t sit there and become a health risk. Fiber helps with balanced blood sugar, weight management, cholesterol levels, digestive conditions, mental health, immune function and more!

🫐 Where do we get fiber? Plant foods! Nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

🥑 Variety matters! An important measure of gut health is diversity, so we need to eat different plant foods- not just the same lettuce, tomato, apple and banana. Mix it up! Our goal is to GRADUALLY move toward eating plant foods to 30 different plant foods each week and roughly 30 grams of fiber/day.

💧 When you increase fiber intake, increase water too.

🌈 Besides fiber, plant foods contain phytonutrients and the type of phytonutrient differs from plant to plant. The color of the fruit/vegetable is an accurate indicator of the health benefits of eating that plant.

🍅 Red is for immune health.
🥕Orange is for eyesight, skin health and collagen production, as well as bone & joint health. It’s also really important for endocrine function (diabetes protection), and reproductive health & avoiding neural tube defects.
🍌Yellow is for digestion.
🫑Green is for heart health.
🍆Blue/Purple is for cognitive function.

🎯Aim for at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily!

💚🌱 Dear Dietitians and RD2Be Compadres,

⭐️ You exemplify one of the things I love most about many healthcare professionals, especially what I have seen with dietitians: a willingness to grow, adapt, and align with the science and new processes. We are not a stagnant bunch!

👂 If you feel that outpatient counseling is an area where you would like to expand, then I would lean heavily into motivational interviewing processes.

🧪 You can count on your scientific background to help you find the data that you need to help someone, but the way you express the intervention is at least as important as any recommendation you can provide.

🧰 Some of my favorite tools:

📕 Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible Approach by Berger & Villaume

📕 Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness by Clifford & Curtis

🎥 Dawn Clifford’s MI Tips YouTube page:
https://www.youtube.com/

👩‍🏫 I share all 3 of these with every intern who comes into my practice. I provide additional training on motivational interviewing, follow up with role-playing exercises, have them observe consultations, and assign them their own client for an initial and a follow-up consultation.

✨ These are skills we have to practice before they become natural- just like anything else in life. ☺️

❤️ Happy Counseling!

💤 Ever sleep 6 hours and STILL feel tired? 😩 You’re not alone! Turns out, sleep isn’t just about the hours—it’s about the quality too.

🌙✨Welcome to the Sleep Cycle Connection! 🛏️
Let’s break it down: Your body needs 4–5 full sleep cycles (90–120 min each) to recharge properly. Cutting sleep short (like only 6 hours) interrupts deep and REM sleep—where all the magic happens. 🧠💪

🚨 Sleep Stages Explained:
Light Sleep: Transition into rest, body relaxes. 😴
Deep Sleep: Tissue repair, muscle growth, and memory consolidation. 🧩
REM Sleep: Emotional balance, creativity, and learning. 🧠✨ So if you’re skipping cycles, you’re missing out on recovery!

⚡ Why 6 Hours Often Isn’t Enough:
    •    Brain Fog & Slower Decisions 🧠💤
    •    Increased Stress & Mood Swings 😖
    •    Heart & Metabolic Health Risks ❤️
    •    Weakened Immune System 🤧

✅ The Sweet Spot? Most adults need 7–9 hours for peak energy, focus, and health.
🔥 Tips to Boost Sleep Quality:
🌙 Keep a consistent bedtime & wake-up time
📱 Cut screens before bed (blue light = 👎)
☕ Skip caffeine in the evening
🛏️ Keep your room cool, dark, and quiet
🧘 Try relaxation techniques like meditation or other mindfulness practices.

😱 Most Americans barely get the fiber they need! Women should aim for 25 grams a day and men 38 grams per day.

100 Here’s your easy grocery list to fix that and hit your fiber goals. Save this and grab these at the store this week.

👩🏼‍⚕️ PATIENT SUCCESS STORY! ❤️

👉 This patient was referred to me by his doctor 3 months ago for help with blood sugar and weight management.

📍 He arrived with 2 medical diagnoses- diabetes and obesity.

📅 As of this week (A TOTAL OF 3 MONTHS LATER) he no longer meets the diagnostic criteria for either one. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

📸 The first image is a snapshot of my patient sending me his lab results as soon as they arrived this morning. He wanted to share his success with his supportive guide in this process. His words, “We got there doc!”

🥰🥰🥰 Not going to lie, this girl still sheds happy tears every single time these messages come through.

Infinitely grateful for shared wins and living a purposeful life. ❤️

At Begin Again Nutrition we would be delighted to help you too! HTTPS://BeginAgainNutrition.com

🍲 Welcome to soups and stew season, where you might be making more foods that include roots and/or thickeners.

🍠 Arrowroot is one of those roots, similar to a sweet potato, yam, or cassava, that can be eaten in the whole form, and by the way, it has five grams of protein per cup, so it’s much higher in protein than some of those other roots.

🤍You might also be using arrowroot as a thickener. You can use it in place of cornstarch or even flour in some cases.

💩 The thing about arrowroot is it also has benefits for improving the bulk of your stools. So if you typically have regular bouts of diarrhea, or if you suffer from IBS-D, which has the predominant effect of diarrhea, there are studies showing that consuming just two teaspoons a couple times a day with meals may reduce the symptoms of diarrhea by improving the formation of your stool.

🌅 As the days grow shorter and fall transitions into winter, many people experience changes in their mood and energy levels.

😞 This phenomenon, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that typically occurs during the colder, darker months. SAD can affect mental health, productivity, and overall well-being.

☀️🚶‍♂️Physical activity has been shown to boost mood and alleviate depression symptoms. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise several days a week. Activities like walking, yoga, and cycling can be particularly beneficial. Outdoor exercise, when possible, provides the added benefit of exposure to natural light.

😴 Our Circadian Rhythms have a huge impact on our physical and mental health. The better we get synchronized with our internal clock, the better our physical and mental health will be.
👌Here’s a few tips to sync up with your natural rhythms:
1. Keep a consistent schedule. Try to eat, sleep, go to bed, wake up, etc at roughly the same time each day.
2. Don’t eat during the first hour after rising. The digestive system will be ready to process food about an hour after you rise. Stick with water, unsweetened tea, or black coffee if you need something right away.
3. Enforce wakefulness by getting 30 minutes of daylight during the day, and avoid blue light 2 hours before bed.

🌿 SAGE! There are many benefits to consuming sage INCLUDING menopause and perimenopause support!

😋 Sage can safely be consumed in foods and teas, or you could decide to use sage extract as part of your menopause support regimen.

👩🏼‍⚕️ Clinical research shows that 280 mg daily for for 4 weeks reduces overall symptoms of menopause by 39% when compared to placebo! 🤯 PMID: 33615001

💚 As a dietitian, I always recommend foods first, because foods have multiple benefits including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and more.
