Our world has been disrupted in so many ways - our views on health, priorities, and socioeconomic inequality. But perhaps the most profound impact has been on our mental wellbeing. 🌍
As a healthcare provider, I've witnessed firsthand how the pandemic has pushed mental health to the forefront. Fear of the virus, social anxieties, and above all, isolation have taken a toll on both healthcare workers and patients.
The elderly, in particular, have suffered devastating consequences. My own father, an 80-year-old, battled acute appendicitis during Covid. I had to take him and had to leave him in thr ER alone, and it was heartbreaking to see him go through the scariest time of his life without family by his side. 😔
His recovery was equally harrowing - intubation, a stroke, and then transferred to a facility where we could only visit once a week through a window. This wasn't the recovery journey we had in mind. After two nights, he begged to go home, and there he made a full recovery. 🙌
But my story is just a glimpse of what's happening to patients worldwide, especially the elderly and vulnerable. We can't regain physical health without supporting mental wellbeing. Many elderly patients remain isolated as a result of Covid.
As a society, let's do better. Providing medical care is more than just physical; it's about tending to the whole person. ❤️
