✨ Trauma often creates deep rooted feelings of shame and fear. It is common to avoid these emotions, causing us to burry them in an attempt to deny their existence. The more we do this the stronger their impact becomes in our lives, often bleeding into our relationships, moods, and beliefs about the world.

✨ This process can be particularly helpful for those who experience a lot of "triggers" but cannot quite figure out why. Working with our shadow might seem scary, however it is by facing and integrating this part of ourselves that we can finally become freed from the pain that trauma continues to cause.

There is no right or wrong way to respond to trauma. We all have a unique way of reacting to abnormal circumstances that can effect us both short- and long-term.

The following are some common ways that trauma can show up in a survivors daily life.

✨ How do you experience trauma responses?

✨ After experiencing trauma, our resilient zone (the place where we feel both calm + alert) can become smaller. Because of this, trauma survivors can get disregulated more easily causing feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, or unsafe.

✨ The Shift + Stay technique is a great way to bring yourself back into your resilient zone by continuing to actively bringing your attention away from the distress and onto calm or neutral sensations.

✨ - The more you practice shifting, the easier it becomes to stay!

✨ Flashbacks are a common and scary symptom for people who have experienced trauma. Different than a memory, flashbacks can feel like one is experiencing the traumatic event again in this moment. This can leave the person feeling detached, anxious, numb, confused, and a variety of other sensations or emotions.

✨ Although an assessment and treatment from a trauma-informed mental health professional is needed to heal the trauma, these tips can be used to help in the moment if a flashback is triggered. Coming back into the present and reminding yourself that what you have just experienced is a memory is the best thing someone experiencing this symptom can do in the moment.

When trauma is not fully processed it can show up in a variety of ways, most of which EMDR can help treat. EMDR works by helping the brain heal itself naturally by assisting the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex communicate and fully processes traumatic memories, alleviating the symptoms. ✨Interested in learning more? Trauma-informed care has become a bit of a buzzword, but how can you tell if you're actually receiving it?

Trauma-informed clinicians:

✨ see the whole person, respecting their identities, and exploring how these pieces may contribute to current stressors and strengths.

✨ create a welcoming and comfortable environment, remaining calm, transparent, and validating.

✨ understand that trauma can cause a person to adapt in a variety of ways.

✨ ask open-ended questions, recognize strengths, offer options, and empower clients to make their own decisions.

✨ My favorite thing about therapy is that it is 100%, unapologetically, gloriously, all about you! You get to speak freely about absolutely anything without worrying about taking up too much space, upsetting the listener, saying the wrong thing, or being judged. The benefit of having that kind of support can feel magical. 🥰

✨ What is your favorite thing about or benefit you've received from therapy? Let me know in the comments!!
